1 out of 5 stars DON'T BOTHER!!!   February 13, 2006

I upgraded from Microsoft Money 2001 and couldn't be more frustrated with the 2006 version. I've had it for almost 2 months now and first of all, nothing about it is intuitive (I thought 2001 was pretty good) -- I still have to click around randomly on the various tabs and screens to find how to do just about anything except the most basic functions. I used to spend about 15 minutes 3x a week for all my financials; now I'm spending a couple of hours 4 or 5 days a week, mostly waiting for screens, fixing errors, or trying to figure out how to get something the way I want it.
One of my most disappointing discoveries is that there is no longer a home inventory in 2006. I spent days creating my home inventory in MM 2001, complete with serial #s and descriptions, and I believe I attached pictures too. Now I'm not sure if or how I can retrieve all that valuable information.
Microsoft Money 2006 is also unreliable and inconsistent. I had set up auto payments to be transferred weekly -- the transfers did go thru, but for 3 weeks in a row, it didn't recognize them when they downloaded automatically, then suddenly began recognizing them again as auto payments.
I also don't like (okay, really hate) how MM "recognizes" your transactions and assumes categories, etc. It's usually wrong, and, last night as I edited these transactions (a real pain), the edits didn't stick. After I entered my edits, they transactions went back to the way they were originally downloaded and I had to re-edit.
I also wish MM wouldn't match up downloaded transactions with ones that almost match but obviously don't, like $33.52 from Shell Oil and $34.45 from Walgreens. This is a real pain to resolve and was also my only complaint about 2001. I thought they would've fixed this for 2006.
If I stay with MM 2006, I'll probably do away with the automatic downloads, and possibly the auto/electronic bill pay -- I can do that thru my bank's website easily enough and just enter manually into MM. I looked into Quicken because I used that years ago and liked it, but I'm not sure I wouldn't have the same issues there. I am seriously considering going back to the old ledger book after the frustrations I've had over the past couple of months! Unless you're not really serious about keeping your numbers straight and just want a program to play house with, DON'T BOTHER!!!

1 out of 5 stars Another Microsoft flop   February 1, 2006

the old joke about "Microsoft Works" being an oxymoron is true about this useless software. I bought it after having to return the latest edition of Quicken which I bought because Quicken told me the old version would no longer work--the new quicken cannot download from my bank--it simply isn't among their listed banks-- so I sent it back; the old version stopped downloading from my bank after a while. I bought Microsoft Money Deluxe 2006 and though it does list my bank and will download the information--well most of it--- it cannot balance my account. My bank has no problems balancing my account but this worthless software simply cannot do it. I have tried deleting everything and re-installing and after a short while it will fail to download some items and simply cannot balance the account. There is no way to correct for this flaw either. To add insult to injury it tries to balance to a STATEMENT--the whole point of on-line banking is speed and the fact a paper statement is no longer needed. I might as well go back to ledger sheets and post from a print-out of the online information from my bank. At least my bank has no problem balancing my account.

1 out of 5 stars A real shame, quite a disappointment.......................   January 22, 2006

This program is having problems doing the simple things, such as connecting to financial institutions. I asked for Microsoft's help through their customer service, and they responded that:This issue may occur due to the following factors:

1. The online services set up for the account are corrupted, or the
synchronization between Money and MSN Money does not work.
2. There is an issue with the data provider, CashEdge.
3. There are some third party programs interfering with the Money
program.

It may take some time to troubleshoot this issue. Thus, your patience
and cooperation are appreciated. "

They better appreciate my time and cooperation, you should see the troubleshooting list involved. This product has been a complete failure.

Here is some of Microsoft's suggestgions in fixing the problem:

Step 1 Test the issue with a new Money file and a new Passport
--------------------
1. Open Internet Explorer and go to www.passport.com.
2. Follow the instructions on that page to create a new Passport.
Please remember the answer to the secret question and registration
information to reset the password in the future.

If you do not have a secondary E-mail address, you can use a dummy
E-mail address instead, or you can register a free Hotmail account at
www.hotmail.com.

Please then create a new Money data file and associate the new Passport
with it:

1. Open Money. Click File, click New, and click New File.
2. Type a name for the new file, select My Documents in the Save In
drop-down menu, and then click OK.
3. Follow the wizard to complete the new file setup. Associate the new
Passport with the new data file.
4. Add the same account, set up the online service for it and check if
you can update this account in the new Money file.

If the account still cannot be updated with a new Money data file
associated with a new Passport, please ignore the following steps and let me
know. If you are able to update the account successfully in the new
file with a new Passport Money associated, let's continue with the
following test:

Step 2 Test the issue with the new file and your original Passport
--------------------------------------------------------------
1. Open Money with the new Money data file and sign in with the new
Passport.
2. Check if you can access the data file. If you can, please click
File, and then click Password Manager.
3. Click the Change button. Select "Yes, I want to change the Microsoft
Passport I use to sign into my Money file" and then click Next.

Note: if you are asked to disable synchronization with MSN first,
please read the instructions carefully before following them. After the
synchronization is disabled, please go to Password Manager again and follow
the steps to change the Passport association.

4. Type your original Passport sign-in address and password, and then
click Sign In.
5. Click Done.

Please then try to update the account again (you may need to
re-establish the online service first). Can the account be updated properly in
this new file?

Note: To switch back to the original Money file, please choose its name
in the File menu.

Some list!!!! Save yourself the time and aggravation and buy something else, ANYTHING ELSE.

4 out of 5 stars Good product; beware of online service expiration   January 21, 2006

I've been using MS Money for the past 6 years, getting a new version almost every year. You can't beat the price for this product - the Standard version is practically free with myriads of rebates and special offers (or simply get it from eBay). The latest versions (05 and 06; 06 isn't that much different from 05) are very stable, rich in features and generally easy to use. The improvements made over the years in the online features are especially impressive - I am now getting automatic updates of 2/3 of my bank/credit/brokerage accounts.

My biggest complaint - you find this only after installing the product, not anywhere in the Amazon product description or on the retain box - is that you are limited to 2 years of online update services. This means you will have to get a new version of Money at least every other year. I personally don't make a big deal of this restriction, but the practice of advertising all the cool online features without mentioning their term limits (not even in fine prints) is rather questionable.

1 out of 5 stars Converting from Quicken Doesn't Work   January 14, 2006

If you try to convert a quicken file with password protection it will just tell you it was unable to convert the file. No other messages. Take off the password protection (even though it says it will still convert it). Once I had converted the file I noticed several accounts in the summary did not match balances. I have financial information for 10+ years, there is no way I am going to line by line double check entries.

I wouldn't bother buying this if you expect to convert from Quicken to Money.
