Dual monitors without trouble in WinXP but not in 64-bit Linux November 9, 2008 I bought this card ten months ago and have been using it happily with my Windows XP (SP-1 and SP-2) systems. However, when I boot to my Linux alternate OS, the 64-bit version of Fedora Core 9, I've had a lot of trouble, and some of it appears irremediable.
After much fiddling in the Linux OS, I finally got my desktop to stretch across both monitors, treating them as a single, extended screen. But I have not been able to get them set up as "twin-view" (nVidia's term), in which I can set up each monitor as a separate screen, each with its own wallpaper, its own resolution setting, and its own orientation. I like to have one monitor set up in landscape orientation and one in portrait. Easy to make this card do that in WinXP, but can't get it done in Linux 64-bit.
Don't buy anything PNY.. October 30, 2008 Let me start by stating that I'm a Sysadmin for a medium sized network. In addition to that, I've assembled hundreds of PC's. I purchased and installed this card without issue. The unit worked for a little over a week before it began crashing to a black screen. Once the card was removed and the original configuration was restored, the machine was back up with no issues. The vendor would not provide an RMA but directed me directly to PNY and so began an email dance back and forth with generic trouble shooting info that didn't apply to the card. After several attempts to get an RMA, and continuing to get more "help" I finally gave up and threw the card away. Having dealt with many RMA's over the years, I'm amazed how unresponsive this vendor is. I will never use any PNY product for home or work.
Excellent Performance, Bargain Price !! October 21, 2008 Quick and easy install on a 9-year-old DELL XPS T600 running WinXP Home, SP3. The 256MB of memory took some load off of the CPU, and made a HUGE difference in the overall performance of the machine --- Faster initial loading, applications and programs loaded and ran faster, and overall video quality improvement was spectacular !! A real high-performance upgrade for an older machine that's already maxxed out with memory. It's quiet (no fan),too --- but it runs pretty warm, so make sure your machine is clean inside and has good cooling. I am very pleased in all respects, and will buy another one for my 2-year-old DELL 3100.
excellent for older machines October 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this PCI card because I wanted to play Portal and my machine is old.
My machine specs: Dell Dimension 2400 2.66gh processor 768mb ram XP Pro still running SP2 normal integrated graphics card
If you're running into problems these tips might help: Problem 1) It's not recognizing the new card at all, you need to go into your bios before windows even starts up and tell it to auto select the graphics card or set it to PCI (my machine only had auto)
Problem 2) If you're seeing that it's using the correct graphics card while loading before windows starts, but then goes blank until you plug it back into your old integrated slot, you need to go into your Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > Device manager > Display adapters > then right click and disable your old one (the one that doesn't say NVIDIA.
Problem 3) You can't get the drivers cd to install because it keeps telling you the card isn't actually installed, google drivers for the card type and you'll find a link to the nvidia page. Download and install that (there'll be a bundle for all Geforce FX 5 series)
Problem 4) You've reformatted your computer and even installed the correct drivers from the website, but the color and resolution are set low and can't be raised. For some odd reason you need to still install the drivers for your integrated video card first even though you'll be disabling it again.
I hope some of these will be helpful to you as they're all problems I ran into, but now that I've got it up and running, I love it. The video out is pretty good and there isn't any lag like I was expecting from the card. I love it!
Great value dual montior card September 20, 2008 My office went dual monitor a year ago. I found that this is the best price performance card on the market. Easy to install and very reliable. Have never had a return or failure. I am sure there are higher performance cards out there but this is very good for the money.
