Wow! January 4, 2006 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
When my wife said she wanted a GPS system -- and kept getting lost to prove it -- I spent weeks researching. Magellan... Lowrance... Tom Tom... Garmin. And then dozens of models by each manufacturer. Which to choose? Well, I knew she wanted something easy, something large enough to see but small enough to hide in the car, and something reliable. And she wasn't the type to load and unload maps from a computer. So I read reviews, went to stores, and finally decided that the Garmin Streetpilot C340 was right for her. And it sure is! She loves the size, loves the touch screen, and especially loves the fact that the voice calls out the street names, something that is not available on most other units. (They just say: turn right in 500 feet. But the C340 actually says: turn right on Maple Street in 500 feet.) My only concern about the unit was the negative reviews about the unit freezing and locking up, but the first thing I did was download the software update from Garmin, and guess what, that is no longer a problem purchasers need to worry about. We just came back from a one week road trip and never got lost once! Never had any lockup! And best of all, if we made a wrong turn -- hey, we're human -- the unit immediately recalculated and rerouted us! So I highly recommend this! And it's worth the $50 extra over the C330 because of the street names, and the ability to add a module to get real-time traffic reports. (We haven't done it yet, but my wife is anxiously looking forward to it since she's often stuck in bumper to bumper traffic!) So run, don't walk, to your favorite on-line store -- mine is Amazon -- and get one!
The internet review warnings are real! December 31, 2005 I was hesitant to buy the new c340 (next up from c330). The street names it announces is a major plus, but....... it didn't work out of the box, took six hours to find a satellite signal -- in Los Angeles. Definitely a buggy unit. Then when it did work, it would tell me to turn right or left at a street, just as or after I passed it! It also wouldn't let me drive the route I want to drive. If I'm on side streets, it tries to get me on the freeway -- when I went on the freeway, it wanted me to exit at every exit! There is an option for Fastest or Shortest route, so that wasn't the problem. Same thing with Detour. I'm sure it's just a buggy one, there seems to be a lot of them out there -- otherwise Garmin would be out of business and there would be a lot of unhappy drivers.
No Manual December 30, 2005 4 out of 17 found this review helpful
Beware...no manual! Can't believe that no one mentioned this in reviews. Don't have a clue how the unit actually performs...but if it weren't for it being a gift I probably would return it just based on no manual.
A Great Product with A Few Flaws December 29, 2005 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this C340 for my wife this Christmas and I have experienced all the wonderful things that you can read in other customers' reviews. It is definately worth the money.
However this product is a bit short of being perfect, and viewer J. Hammer's comment is right on the nail. I hope that Garmin would make improvement with its next software update.
Oh that silly little power plug that you have use with the windshield mount, it came loose the last time I detached the mount from the unit, and I almost lost it!
Saved my boyfriend's life.... December 29, 2005 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
The guy doesn't do directions very well and had a old Garmin system that got stolen from his car. Life hadn't been the same for him....so I got him this one for Christmas.
It is really great. SO simple to use with the touch screen controls. The screen is small but adequate and it looks good attatched to the car windshield (there aren't a ton of wires hanging all over making a mess). It gets us where we need to go and when you go the wrong way, it can refigure your route SO much faster that his old one. I love it...now, I want one for me too.
The voice of "Jill" is quite good at pronoucing difficult street names, but sounds really funny when it comes to streets like "Fairview"....which we get a kick out of.
Well, worth the money!
