5 out of 5 stars BITING THE BLADES OF CHAOS   October 30, 2008
Basically you are a power hungry Spartan general named Kratos who sells his soul to "Ares" the god of war in return for victory.Driven by rage you conquer anyone loyal to the goddess Athena until one incident sets you on the path to your true destiny, you must destroy the God of War.To succeed you must fight legions of cyclops',undead soldiers,Minotaurs and countless other mythological beasts in places such as Athens,Pandoras temple and even Hades itself. The story sucks you in and feels like an actual Greecian epic. With the aid of the Gods and the lust for vengeance to drive you on,God of War is one hard hitting/mind blowing gaming epic that's not to be missed. If you like your action over the top/angry and insist on a good story then look no further because God of War has it all.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Action Adventure Game I Have Ever Played   October 23, 2008
God Of War is so much fun, from the gameplay mechanics, to watching the beautiful cinematics. As a Legend Of Zelda fan, I would have to say this game greatly exceeds any Zelda game I have ever played.

Ok maybe not THAAAT much, but if I was to rate Ocarina Of Time a 10, God Of War would be a 9. The storyline greatly exceeds any Zelda game, it is no contest. The only reason I would rate it below Zelda is because of the length of the game. A Zelda game could take me weeks, or months to finish. God Of War only took me 3 days

5 out of 5 stars sick,brutal gameplay   September 17, 2008
This is the best game for PS2 other than god of war 2. i have a Ps3 but my friends reccomended this for me and its been my best buy in along time.the violence is extreme and so is the nudity. this is not for younger gamers im only ten and im saying that.overall this game is awesome

4 out of 5 stars Both cathartic and enraging.   September 9, 2008
God of War is an accessible and brutal combo-based action game, with puzzles and light platforming sprinkled throughout to keep the pacing even. It looks great, sounds great, and feels great. It is the game you slip into your Playstation 2 when you want to let off some steam and direct your violent tendencies to unwitting digital victims.

God of War is also somewhat unbalanced. The epic nature of the opening moments against the vicious Hydra -- a large screen-filling boss creature -- repeats only a handful of times more throughout the game. As cathartic as the action is, as much finesse as you can put into your deliciously painful combination strikes, some (but thankfully not too many) areas devolve into mindless hacking akin to Dynasty Warriors or Diablo.

God of War also has very small design issues. Environmental obstacles such as anchored razor blades have collision detection that is too wide. Did that blade just come in contact with you? No, but you'll lose some health anyway and perhaps plummet down to the bottom of the pillar you were trying to climb. Are you a warrior capable of double-jumping and twisting creatures' necks with your legs while climbing a horizontal rope hand-over-hand? Sure, all-powerful one -- but have fun trying to balance like a nervous rookie gymnast when you walk across those beams. That camera is mostly great, but every once in awhile, you're sure to kick the television when an unexpected angle-shift sends you plummeting to your death when jumping around. Oh, and don't ask about the final boss battle that is as tedious as it is epic in presentation.

God of War, then, is not perfect. But it is a game that should be played by any action fan. It's not the most challenging thing out there, and certainly can't hold a candle to Ninja Gaiden Black in terms of technique, but it's got plenty of style, some neat weapon and magic upgrades, a whole swath of interesting enemies, and simply fantastic production values. It makes it easy for you to feel like a totally unstoppable force, but it also (most of the time) makes you feel like you actually did something instead of just watching it happen.

...but guess what: The sequel is better.

1 out of 5 stars What's the fuss?   August 23, 2008

I'm fairly new to video gaming, having only bought my first console a couple of years ago for my young son. But I have grown to love playing, both with my son and by myself. I recently finished all the grown-up games I have (LOL!), and was on the hunt for a new one.

Based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews of the God Of War series, I picked up the first one. And...well...maybe I just don't get it. Maybe I'm too old. Maybe I'm too picky. I can't understand what all the fuss is about. I was TERRIBLY disappointed in this game and feel like I just flushed $20.00 down the toilet.

I feel that the game is juvenile, poorly written, poorly visualized, and...well, kind of lame. The action is ok, but only ok. The sets and characters are so poorly designed that I am shocked they actually made it to the screen (I'm a comic book artist, so maybe my expectations are high). On the whole, from the concept art and designs to the the battles to the unnecessary sex scenes to the character development, this game strikes me as something that came from the imagination of a depressed and angry 14-year-old boy.

Like I said, maybe I'm just too old and picky. I'm glad so many have enjoyed this game. But I'm certainly not one of them, and felt that there needed to be at least one review on here to show that, at least if you're an adult looking for some quality games, God Of War may not be the perfect video game that you expect it to be.
