Great GPS October 15, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It is my first time to purchase a GPS. I chose this one based on the review of this item. It works good, fast searching satellite, clear pronunciations. The only thing I need to mention is the map on this GPS is only 2008, but you can go to garmin website to download new 2009 Map by using the serial NO. it is a huge file about 2 GB. it took me one hour to down load and another to update it. Great GPS, works great so far. Owned for one month.
Garmin 350 October 15, 2008 We have found the Garmin 350 extremely helpful trying to get to places that we do not know how to get to. It is a very accurate and precise tool to use when on the raid.
I can't get lost October 15, 2008 This is the best purchase I've made in a long time. The Garmin has given me directions that cut my usual drive time in half in some cases and I drive with a newfound confidence.
ACQUIRING SATELLITE October 14, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
First of all, I received this order pretty quickly from Amazon, so kudos to them.
But using the Garmin 350 for a week now, I must say it is quite easy and effective to use... that is, WHEN it starts to work. As with any GPS device, it has to acquire a satellite connection before you start using it. If you're like me and you live in a condo with a basement parking, obviously, you would have to get out of the parking level, get away from your tall buildings, before you can get a satellite signal.
Aside from the initial boot time, which is also quite long, the time it takes to acquire a satellite signal is about 6-8 minutes. So that's a lot of thumb twiddling for you before the Garmin decides to get to work.
So if you're in a hurry... well with this GPS unit, you're going to be late. Better leave 6-8 minutes ahead of time and find an area practically devoid of any structures. Oh and it wants you to wait in the middle of the street while you wait too, otherwise it won't even begin to start working. Be prepared for a lot of people flipping you the bird for holding up traffic.
One last thing, the suction/stand accessory that comes with it is totally useless.
It walks the walk October 14, 2008 This is my first experience with a GPS unit and the Garmin nuvi pretty much delivers what it promises. The voice commands are clear and the street names are normally correct and recognizable. At least in one instance the nuvi refers to the road by a name instead of Route 41 as it is commonly known as and marked as such. In that case be prepared to make your turn even if the road is marked differently. Another thing it does not necessarily offer you the best route or to be even aware of some of the most commonly known routes between city locations. As a result in my opinion it is always a good idea to look at a map before you journey. In any case if you rely solely on the GPS it most likely will get you to your destination eventually. It definately would be a god send if you are lost in an unfamiliar area.
I find it most useful when I am going somewhere there are a lot of turns or in unfamiliar urban areas. For example if I am driving to Orlando I dont need the unit to get me to Orlando, what is helpful is for the unit to tell me what exit to get off the Interstate and handle me through the local streets to the final destination. I suspect that most GPS systems have similar limitations.
Overall its a useful gadget but I dont intend to toss out the countless maps I have in the car. As for the mp3 and photo features, although unimportant to me they seem to work fine and may be of value to others.
