Perfect...err, almost July 24, 2008 An excellent value for a GPS. It isn't perfect, but then what is! I have noted it seems to want to route me to an address or two (in town) via street names that simply do not exist in that part of town - in other words, it seems to properly identify where to make a turn, but sometimes will incorrectly identify the name of the street to turn onto. As long as you are aware of this quirk, then it works just fine. For "on the road" use it seems to work perfectly. I would recommend this unit to anyone who wants a good solid value.
Great device - why are the maps two years old??? July 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this one month ago and love it. Family member purchased one 2 weeks ago and loves it. But why is the mapping information two years old? The garmin website offers free download of 2009 version but it takes about 4 hours (NOT an exaggeration) to download. In this era of just-in-time inventory, have these things been sitting on a shelf for two years?
AMAZING July 24, 2008 One of the best products I ever purchased. Used it on a trip to Canada shortly after it arrived. I never used a map or made a wrong turn. Very easy to use.
does what it should do... July 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It does what it is supposed to do. It just doesn't do it as fast as I would like. If you turn the device off for more than an hour or two, it takes a LONG time to find its satellites and figure out where you're going. If you use your garmin all the time, you won't notice this. However, when you're waiting at a traffic light and want to know which way to turn, 3 minutes becomes a very long time.
The great news is that once it finds you, it does an awesome job. I don't get lost anymore, and for that I'd buy it again. It's better than the TomTom One that my mom bought me for Christmas. This has more POIs and more small towns. It also is a really easy to use format, which is great for non-computer people like me. I have lots of favorites stored, too, which is great when you're involved in something like a book club where you go somewhere once in a while, but not often enough to remember how to get there.
When you first buy a new garmin, you get a free map update on-line. This takes all day, but is worth it as those typically run you about $70, from what I hear.
Garmin has a hard time figuring out shopping centers, so if you're going to a store that might be located in a shopping center, don't let Garmin do the thinking for you. Look around and see if you can find the store. Chances are that garmin thinks the store is located directly on the street, where a mailbox would be if you were to put the store's mailbox there.
Garmin has lots of little hidden features, so when you get it, press all things that look like they might be buttons. I know I'm still discovering stuff. :)
Best gift I have ever received July 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received the Garmin Nuvi 350 from my husband for Christmas in 2007. He got it for me because I would get really nervous about driving by myself in unfamiliar places or cities, and I would drag him places he did not want to go because I would make him drive me.
This GPS has changed my life. The first time I tried it I brought Google directions with me (old habits die hard)- but once the GPS talked me through the turns of my home town, I knew I could trust it. I haven't Google mapped anything else since. I LOVE this thing. I drive by myself now in unfamiliar places (it's so easy!) and no longer even think about making my husband come with me. I don't need to anymore.
One of the things I really love is the ability to search for ammenities right when you need them. Gone are the days of pulling off the interstate and guessing which way to turn to find a gas station. Turn by turn directions right to the pump, and it even says the name of the gas station!
I also love how dead on the ETA is. I have pulled into the parking lot to the MINUTE of when the GPS said I would. Love that.
The fact that it says the street names really matters. I know what to look for and it tells you twice when you have to turn. I love it.
This is the best gift I have ever received as an adult. It has changed how I feel about myself, and has given me the freedom to do what I want to do and go where I want to go, even if my husband doesn't want to go with me.
I recommend it highly.
