Download maps July 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have as yet to use the Garmin... I have tried three times to do the update download of maps. Supposedly should only take a couple of hours since I have DSL. I actually left the system up for 14 hours one time !!!
It gets into about 60 - 70% and simply "locks up".
I have the unit laying beside my computer when and if I get around to spending several hours waiting for the complete download !
Disappointed? Yes !
Just what I needed July 20, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this because I had to go apartment-hunting in a city (a kinda large city) that I'd never driven in before. Because it was on sale at Amazon it ended up costing me a little more than it would have cost to rent a car with GPS included. (I like to rent economy cars.) Thanks to the Garmin, the driving-around-town portion of my trip was stress free. It has now earned its keep!
Most Important Pros IMHO: 1) You can program destinations in advance; 2) It saves "recent destinations"; 3) It announces the streets by name and makes a noise as you're approaching them; 4) Easy-to-read screen; 5) Loud enough to hear when driving on the highway (if mounted on windshield); 6) If you miss a turn, the Garmin will immediately tell you how to get back on track; 7) Small enough to put in my purse. Cons IMHO: 1) Pre-programed POIs are not that interesting to me (mostly chains . . . and even then, the best chains don't seem to be in there); 2) Window mount could be better; sometimes the Garmin falls off; 3) Had to download the 2009 maps (they were free) from the Garmin website; it took FOREVER, even with a high speed connection. Tips: 1) Play with the voices to find the one that has an accent that is easy for you to understand; 2) Gently pull on the windshield mount to make sure it's secure before clicking the Garmin into place; 3) If the Garmin has trouble connecting to the satellites, turn it off and turn it on again; 4) Do download the manual and play with the Garmin before you need it; its user-interface isn't the most intuitive. 5) Don't buy the Nuvi 350 for the MP3 Player; it sounds awful. Apparently, the 600 series can play through your car radio.
Overall, I think the Nuvi 350 is a handy little device. Its maps seem to be about as accurate as Google's . . . which is pretty darn accurate in my current town and my future one. It does make mistakes sometimes; I doubt you could find a GPS that never made any. If I could go back in time, I would still buy the Nuvi 350.
Easy to Use and Easy to Carry with You July 20, 2008 So easy to use and it's small enough to fit into a small purse. I love how the voice (male or female) warns you that a turn is coming. No longer trying to drive and read maps. Excellent for any traveler.
Garmin 350 Nuvi July 19, 2008 A little traveling jewel. I like everything about it with one exception. I cannot adjust the volume high enough when my grandkids are in the car. Simple to use, menu driven, accurate, very portable. I made a good buy with this one. Highly recommend it.
Garmin GPS July 19, 2008 Excellent GPS unit. Was a gift to my brother-in-law and he loves it. Uses it in his business finding addresses.
