5 out of 5 stars great versatile GPS system!   May 6, 2007
I did a lot of research on GPS systems and they all have their pros and cons, just like the Nuvi 350. I never had a GPS system before, and wasn't sure if I would like the Nuvi 350. Turns out that I really like it and I don't regret buying it!

Pros:
*Easy to use- you can't make a mistake in entering things in!
*Easy to install- it takes maybe a minute to install
*Find shortcuts to places you visit
*Great as a handheld if you are walking. Pedestrian mode is great.
*monitors your average speed, max speed, etc as you are driving.
*create custom POI's
*easy to upload new POI's and other information to the Nuvi
*highly customizable to your specific preferences- map view, day/night mode, etc.
*easily change the startup image to something you like
*upload audio books so you can listen to them while you drive
*battery lasts about 6 hours without being plugged in to a power source

Cons:
*power source often loses power and needs to be adjusted in the cigarette lighter
*takes almost 30 seconds to start up
*directions sometimes take you to a place in a roundabout way- but still gets you to where you need to go!
*volume doesn't adjust automatically when you go faster/slower

Overall, I really enjoy my Nuvi. It was worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Great Unit but skip the auto adapter   May 5, 2007

The Nuvi will blow you away! Performance equal to or better than $2500 factory installed automotive units with the added advantage of portability. Perfect for road warriors. The Amazon page inexplicably suggests the Nuvi and the Garmin Vehicle Power Adapter are "Better Together" but the vehicle power adapter is already included in the box. I purchased both but Amazon did work a refund. Power can be a problem - my Nuvi won't go 2 hours on a full charge and Garmin says that's OK - but their literature suggests 8 hour battery life is possible.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be more pleased   May 5, 2007

I have a 2006 Avalon with built-in Nav system but I fly on business and rent cars to get to various locations so I needed a portable GPS (okay I get lost a lot). I bought the Nuvi 350 and, frankly, like it better than the Avalon's Nav system. I like the touch screen and found the speaker plenty loud enough and easy to follow. It is easy to set up and one day I'll get around to those other features such as the MP3 player. There's a reason you-know-who rated this so high. Excellent product.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic for Motorcycle Use   May 5, 2007

I bought the NUVI 350 primarily for use in my car, but was hoping to use it on my motorcycle as well. I had no idea how well it would work.

I do all my set up and programming before I start riding (something that you shouldn't be doing while riding anyway). I then plug it into my helmet speakers (or ear buds) and slip it into my breast pocket. The unit sees the satellites just fine while in my pocket. I can follow its navigation just fine from the voice prompts without seeing the screen, and I don't have a clunky-looking mount clamped to my handlebars. If I need to adjust the settings, (which is rare) I simply pull over for a moment.

One trick: the fold out antenna on the back of the unit turns off when it is fully closed. I just prop it open an eighth of an inch with a business card. It is open enough to work and still plenty flat enough to fit comfortably in your pocket. Further, it doesn't seem to matter if the unit is upside-down, backwards or however, so you don't need to look for extra-wide pockets.

As a bonus, the unit has one of the loudest MP3 players I've heard (volume is often a problem on a bike). It is not amazingly full-featured, but works fine. I just set it to shuffle and push play. When it announces a turn or other instruction, it pauses the music for a moment, speaks its instruction, and then puts the music back on.

I would have loved to get a Zumo, but they are twice the price. I don't feel I compromised at all.

4 out of 5 stars An Amazing Little Device, With a Few Minor Problems   May 3, 2007

The Nuvi 350 is my first and only GPS. I have had it for about two months and took it on recent trips to the Seattle and Atlanta areas.

The unit locks onto satellite signals fairly quickly and has even locked onto signals when it was inside buildings. Entering a destination and setting it up to navigate is quick and easy. The Nuvi also quickly recalculated driving directions when I strayed off course. The display is bright and clear and the voice commands can be easily heard. When not being used, it easily slips into a shirt or pants pocket.

This gadget is not without a few problems, however. When the unit is mounted on the front windshield at night, there is an annoying reflection from the screen in the windshield. A small shield around the screen should eliminate this, but Garmin advised it that markets no shield for the screen. If a passenger is in the car, this problem can be eliminated because the unit will track with the passenger holding the Nuvi in his lap. The Nuvi also worked well when I was a passenger in the rear seat and held it in my lap.

I found that there was on occasion a problem with the tracking software or map accuracy or possibly both. While driving through "tulip country" north of Seattle one afternoon, the Nuvi told me to drive the wrong way on two one way streets and also told me to turn into one dead end street (no, the dead end street was not my destination.) I also found that, in city driving, the Nuvi sometimes directed me onto side streets, while sticking to main thorough fares would have made much more sense.

The bottom line is that this is an amazing little device. It holds complete street maps of the US. It can eliminate much wasted driving time, especially if you have no map or other directions available or are driving by yourself. On the other hand, if you are in a strange area and have a map and/or directions available from another source, I would suggest taking a little time to review them before starting off. This type of "reality check" might just keep the Nuvi from leading you astray. Notwithstanding these problems, the Nuvi will get you to your destination, but possibly not as quickly as someone who is intimately familiar with the area will.
