5 out of 5 stars Compact and Versatile   April 24, 2007

This product is a little expensive, but well worth the money. I have not used the photo display or the MP3 functions(I'll probably never will), but the rest of the product is outstanding. I won't go anywhere without it. But remember, don't ever leave it in the car where someone can see it because someone broke into my car and stole my last GPS. Anyways, I highly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest thing I own...   April 24, 2007

I just received this product for my 25th birthday, and it is amazing. Not only do I never have to worry about being lost again, I have an MP3 player, a language translator, a currency converter, and more. The Uber-Portability of this item is what makes it the best model around. It is easy to see while driving, but can also comfortably fit in your pocket.

This has all sorts of uses and it's great that when you think, "oh I need X" and it relates to directions, the Nuvi can do it. Real examples of how I've used this:
- Where's the nearest BlockBuster
- Where's the next train station and will I get there in time (I already had the train schedule, this just told me what time I'd arrive)
- Finding a hotel near the wedding
- Driving down a street with unlit street names at night when I know how to get there, just not at night
- How much did I speed to get here? ;)
- How do you spell San Luis Obispo
- How far is it from X to Y
- Find a route that doesn't involve this road (because there was traffic)

Very happy with this purchase, and I have a feeling I haven't found all the features yet. Some maps are outdated, so I imagine the "where's the closest X store" will loose value in a few years but of course addresses never change. Phone numbers to most addresses is a handy feature if you arrive at an empty building and wonder where that store went!

I have owned GPS units from all of the major producers...My verdict; Don't buy anything but a Garmin...They are the leaders...As for the Nuvi 350; this thing is fun! I live in the Washington DC area, and it does a remarkable job of getting me where I want to go...OK, it can't account for the frequently closed streets in DC (demonstrations, etc), but it does re-route me without breaking a sweat...As with any GPS, it does not know the shortcuts that the locals can tell you about, and will sometimes send you a slightly longer way...But if you are that familiar with an area, you probably don't need your GPS on local trips anyway! The volume could be a bit louder...It is fine with the windows up, but, on these nice Spring days, it can be hard to hear with the windows down...It is great having the voice pronounce the actual street names instead of merely "turn left in 300 feet"...If I had to mention a criticism, it would be that sometimes the unit gives you short notice of a turn...Of course, here in DC, nobody will let you over into the other lane anyway...The mounting suction cup is sturdy and hasn't fallen off yet...In all but direct sunlight, the screen is readable...I would highly recommend using one of the screen protectors available for hand held devices...They attach and peel off easily and, if you have grubby fingers, will save your screen from possible scratches from frequest cleanings...It locates satellites quickly, and the antenna is as sensitive as any I have used...I have an external antenna that I used with a prior unit, but have had no need of it yet...Might be useful in cities with huge skyscraper "canyons"...I have updated the software once with Garmins Auto-Updater, and it went smoothly...It will be interesting to see how much Garmin charges for the first map upgrade...I will be going to Europe next Fall, and I have noticed that the expansion card for Western Europe is rather expensive ($240 USD) (Doesn't seem like the card should be almost half the cost of the unit)..The maps are very accurate, even to very minor roads in parks, malls, apartment complexes, etc...As for the MP3 player; It is adequate, but will never replace the in car stereo; Have not tried the talking book option yet; The World Clock, Currency Converter and Calculator work as advertised...I do not have any of the other add-ons...Nice that it comes with a carrying case to protect the screen...It is light enough to use while walking downtown, but it does "lock" to the street, so you always seem to be walking down the middle of the road! But, it gets you around town. If you are looking for a GPS for hiking, mountain bike riding, Geo-Caching, etc., select another unit more suitable. In summary, I highly recommend the Nuvi 350 for an auto based GPS...You will find yourself smiling as the voice directs you to your destination!

My wife bought this for me for Christmas. Now its in her car and I never get to use it so I ordered another for my pickup. This device is absolutely a necessity when you travel to anywhere.

I use this for business purposes as well as personal. The one thing if an address is old or the establishment moved you might miss getting there. But that isnt the fault of the unit. Also, the womens pronounciation is weird and mispronounced sometimes, i.e. instead of saying Rock Road, she says it "Rockaroad" or instead of saying Oregon, "Orygun" (how us Oregonians say it) she says it "Origone", less so for the male. But so what else is new?

Need the closest gas station, a room for the night, a place to eat of an assorted ethnicities, closest airport or bus or train station, then buy this gps. Its all in there, plus more. No more getting lost or turned around. Take the wrong or miss your turn? Not a problem, it recalibrates within seconds and get you back on track. You can set it for a bike, car, walking or a truck.

You even get your choice of languages and either a female or male voice. Last time I checked my wife changed it to the male voice. MMM must be therapy for her to get directions from a man that doesn't get lost.

I highly recommend this device. We use it almost every day in some manner or another. If not on a programmed trip it will tell you how fast your going down the road along with as detailed map you want. It allows you to zoom in or out. From a street by street picture or you can look at the whole USA.

Men no more last minute "TURN HERE" just as you pass the street. Women, the mans voice is kind of attractive, as he doesn't grumble, grumble, grumble. And for both, it beats the therapy sessions. But gone are the we got lost excuse when your late. Just hide it in the glove box!
