Good GPS, but reliability issues April 13, 2006 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
I have had the Nuvi for 4 months and have taken it across the country a couple of times. It has thrilled me many times by giving me routes around traffic in strange cities. It was worth the price. If the store you are purchasing this unit from offers an EXTENDED WARRANTY, you may want to consider this! See my comments below.
Good: * Good GPS navigation * Easy to use * Nice size * Nice interface * Fast * Does not lock up or have any software glitches * Just plug it into your PC and it automatically shows up as a USB flash memory drive (actually shows up as two - one called Nuvi and one for the SD card) * There is more than 500 MB of free memory space that can be used for MP3's (see below) or for pictures or audio books. For some reason, this is not advertised anywhere! * All navigational and system files are readily accessible as soon as the device is attached to the computer under a Garmin directory. However, I cannot figure out if Garmin offers upgraded maps or points of interest. * A lot of good points of interest - they probably have about 50-60% of all places (gas stations, restaurants, etc.) from my estimations. * The manual is loaded on the unit and can be copied to your PC via USB.
Bad: * To get back to the map, you have to back out of all menus and then click the map button -- Should be faster! * The window bracket is breaking after 4 months of babied usage! The plastic that surrounds the metal pin used for up-and-down adjustments is not as thick as it should be. * I used the MP3 player for 30 minutes at 75% volume listening to a talk and the SPEAKER BLEW! The volume was only the same as the normal navigational instructions. I hope this is only a fluke problem. I, nevertheless, will NOT be using the MP3 player again (after I get a replacement)! If you're getting this for playing MP3's, think again. * The unit only plays MP3's and not other media like WMA's * Some of the voices in some of the languages (like the British accent lady) is not loud enough or understandable. * Occasionally, the Nuvi gives me bad directions like telling me to exit the freeway then get back on the freeway again. * The Nuvi obviously has a snap-to feature in the software where it will assume you are on the road or on the prescribed route even if the GPS is saying that you are off. The negative aspects of this are that when you leave the route (like exiting the freeway), it often cannot tell you are not on the original road until you make a more drastic turn.
I have been waiting for a couple of days for Garmin customer support to return my e-mail to them to give me a required number so I can return the unit to their facility. I will really miss the unit for the entire time it will be gone while Garmin evaluates the unit to see whether they repair or replace. I hope it won't be too long! At this point, I still recommend it.
Daddy has a new toy...and he loves it. April 10, 2006 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I've had a handful of handheld devices and I am not an easy sell. The Nuvi 350 is simply the hands-down winner of all of the units that I've seen/tested. It's easy-to-use, intuitive (I never opened a manual or looked online to learn how any of the features worked), and packed with features that no other device offered.
What I love: -Simple navigation through the screens -Bright, clear, concise directions -Garmin releases many updates to keep POIs fresh -The ability to add scads of POIs as well as MP3s and Pictures. -The Language translator add-on is a cool feature that I will definitely use on upcoming trips -The amazing amount of extras that all of the other reviewers have mentioned. -The small size -The near-perfect voice instructions
The con: -No breadcrumb feature
Yes, the price is steep, but it's definitely worth it.
Saweeeet! April 8, 2006 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is the coolest gadget I have used. And it is very acurate, even on foot. We used it in Rome, and it was great. It even recommends restaurants! It comes with everything you need right out of the box. We love it.
Great product! April 5, 2006 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I previously owned a Magellan RoadMate 700. While it was a decent GPS unit, it had several shortcomings that the Garmin Nuvi 350 has addressed.
First off, it has an internal battery, so it can be used without running power cords all over the car. The battery life seems pretty good, although I doubt it would be useful for much longer than about 4 hours.
Secondly, it's extremely small and light, but doesn't sacrifice screen size or quality.
The fact that the unit announces actual street names is great. I've been wanting this feature for years!
The Nuvi also acquires a satellite signal very quickly - usually less than 30 seconds even while in motion. The RoadMate would sometimes take upwards of 5 minutes, particularly if the car was moving when the unit was turned on.
All in all, it's worth the price.
Great navigator and Mac friendly April 1, 2006 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
The nuvi does everything it claims to do and does it well. It really overcomes all of the obstacles that made in-car GPS a pain to use: can be run with no cables, is light and compact, has good maps, easy to see under lots of lighting conditions -- even usable with sunglasses on -- and good quality voice directions.
The best news, for Mac users, is that even though Garmin appears not to know this (as of March, 2006), the nuvi works great with Macs. I have already updated the firmware and can see that it will be easy to update maps and back up waypoints, and there was no Windows or emulation involved. It can all be done from the desktop in Mac OS X (I was using 10.3.9) with no more than intermediate knowledge of the Mac (no special software, "terminal" commands, or other scary stuff).
This unit is pricey, but compared to auto mfgrs' systems, it is a bargain and works better.
The only negative notes I can find so far are that the proprietary 12-volt car charger/power cord is a bit short and as with any GPS, the tradeoff between more map detail and too much screen clutter is often a question of too little or too much instead of just right.
But this morning it routed me around some new construction and as the line of traffic trundled off on a lengthy detour as marked by signs, the nuvi told me to bail out through a local subdivision and got me back onto my route within about two blocks, saving many minutes on the way to work.
