GPS Review August 5, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Overall great product! You should have a familiarity with the area you are traveling (i.e. look at a map to get a feel for the major roadways, etc.) because the Garmin uses different names than the roads are marked. In D.C., for example, the Garmin will tell you to get on I-295, when the roads are only marked with I-395. This would be confusing, if you were not familiar with the area.
Other than that...Fantastic product! Gets satellite acquisition quickly, so easy a technophobe (me) can use it. Will correct your route when you take the wrong turn.
I would recommend it for the "map" impaired...Very liberating!
Excelent GPS device August 4, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This c550 is my first GPS navigator and I'm very pleased with this purchase. The device is extremely useful for me as I recently moved to SF Bay area.
Pros: - easy to use - good text-to-speech street names - fast route recalculation - bright screen - good sound quality - traffic info - the price is affordable
Cons: - A little slow booting. - The disclaimer message is annoying. Not sure if I can disable it. - Sometimes slow satellite acquisition. - If you know the route well, you will see that sometimes it chooses obviously not the simplest straightforward routes. - Outdated points of interest. - The dashboard disk does not stick at all, but suction mount for windshield is fine. - The mp3 player feature is quite useless, as the sound quality is not good enough for music. Anyway, the most of the cons are insignificant for me.
Other thoughts: The screen is small, but I don't need bigger, as all of the info is easy readable. However, sometimes the long street names are written with too small font. Also it would be great to have quick selection of city names from recently used. I'm not sure if the traffic information is useful enough, but it seems working.
try before you buy July 31, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
My father has one of these, and I rented one for a week through Avis on my last trip.
It got things wrong a few too many times for me to love it. I can't tell you how many times it said "recalculating" as we were driving around lost in the Berkeley hills, so near and yet so far from our destination. I wanted to fling it out the window.
To its credit, it was polite in our time of distress. You can change its voice, from Australian to American to British. And things always sound more dignified when coming from an English butler. His "recalculating" seemed to be gently chiding us for failing to heed his advice. "Really, sir, how long do you intend to persist with this folly?" "Well, Jeeves, as long as your directions STINK!"
Search features for things like restaurants are limiting. Shouldn't there be a category or Starbucks or fast food?
Hertz uses different technology (Navtech plus Magellan maybe?) which I remember working better.
Try before you buy.
Greatest little GPS around!!! July 31, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this for a vacation trip out East. What a god send, it was so easy to use, program and change information on it. It helped us to find our way to different locations without having to rely on verbal/written instructions from someone. LOVE IT!!!!!
The Perfect Solution July 30, 2007 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was just about to spend over $3,000 to get the "Technology Package" added to a new Nissan Altima. All I really wanted was the GPS. As luck would have it, before buying the Nissan, I rented a car from Budget and asked for the GPS navigation system. It turned out to be this unit!
I bought my own and I am very, very happy with it. It has all the features of systems like Hertz "Neverlost", it's easy to use, easy to connect and disconnect (one power cord) doesn't need an external antenna (even here in New York City). The more expensive Magellan unit I tried needed an external antenna to function reliably.
Couldn't be happier.
