STAY AWAY FROM TOMTOM July 30, 2007 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I manage a decent size towing service; we purchased three 910's and a 300. With in 1.5 months one of the 910's took a crap. I contacted the company and they replaced it w/ a refurb...about a month later the replacement took a crap again, they replaced it w/ another refurb...two months later that one took a $h!t, I spoke to them again and demanded a brand new unit; I was promised a new one but when I recieved the package it was another refurb; I called them and was told that there was nothing that they can do...Guess what??? That one crapped out: again demanded a new one and was told that they can't promise that they will send a new unit...got a refurb...Do your self a favor and stay away from tom tom.....
Very Good Product July 29, 2007 The only problem with this product is that it may rarely freeze. There is no problem with the windshield locker. You need to turn it 2 (two) times. It has really good navigation capabilities.
buy a garmin July 25, 2007 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
TomTom worked great the first day, then shut off when I needed it the next. I returned it and bought a Garmin nuvi 660. A lot more money for the same features (except european maps) but it works. It's also much thinner and easier to program.
Mixed bag - not the best unit for the US July 22, 2007 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I wanted a portable GPS for both the US and Europe. The Go 910 was the most cost effective for both continents. In terms of it's GPS navigation function (it's intended role after all) it does a reasonable job. It det4ects satellites quickly and in general gets you from A to B. The maps and directions aren't perfect but if you're prepared then this doesn't need to be a problem. So would I recommend it? No. Why? Well here's the list: 1. The mount is appalling - it's just not strong enough for the unit which will sag and in some cases pull the mount of the windscreen 2. The mount won't stick to a wide variety of surfaces so it can only be mounted on a windscreen/windshiled which places the unit out of reach! 3. The mount has a very strange connection to the unit which is bespoke and requires a training video before it can be used! This is clearly an example of an engineering solution that wasn't thought about before implementation. The mount has supposed to have been overhauled and modified but it still makes the unit dangerous to use unless precautions are taken. Yes I do mean dangerous especially when the unit comes off the windscreen suddenly and shoots across the cabin of the car, etc. On this point alone I can't recommend the unit. 4. The screen can't cope with bright sunlight without some sort of additional cover. This is the case even with the brightness turned all the way up. 5. Battery life is okay (4 - 5 hours) but can only be recharged via the stupid mount. I'd much rather have the power supply from the cigarette lighter go straight to the unit rather than rely on the mount. 6. As another poster said it's a real shame that the map only tracks up. It would be nice if it could be set so that North is always up. 7. Can't set an address by US Zip code. This is a real drawback especially if an address is otherwise only known by a PO Box number. So if you really need an economical unit that covers Europe and the US buy this as it is the most cost effective solution. Otherwise it's obvious flaws mean that I have to recommend another unit and probably a unit from another manufacturer.
TomTom GO 910 July 18, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Started having display problems from day 2....flashing and cycling between day and night. Need to use it for the time being, but will have to return it for replacement. Maps are a little out dated but lots of freeway construction in the Houston area. Haven't had any tracking problems and the re-route feature is great. Had to fool the unit into letting me use an alternate route to get to my lake house. Added favoties to navigate to. Not all addresses are defined with the correct cities. Post office info should be a requirement for map builders. Found it hard to communicate mapping problems to manufacturer.
