Poor mount and customer service October 3, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I live overseas in the Netherlands and have to have a GPS to get around. I puchased a Tom Tom 910, paid top dollar, and was expecting to get the best. 3 months later the mount breaks, so I took it back to the shop I bought it at and had it replaced (1yr warranty). 6 months later the new mount breaks. Took it back to the shop and they told me Tom Tom will not replace the mount because Tom Tom said I am taking it off the windshield incorrectly. They don't even know how I take it off the windshield, BUT I have consumer reports stating how defective there mounts are. This is an example of how a company is trying to save money when they built a crappy product. I would not suggest Tom Tom for this reason.
wonderful and priced right October 3, 2007 This is the 2nd TomTom unit I've had, the first got stolen. I just love the product. I've seen Garmin, Cobra, and many from car manufacturers. The Lexus product is the absolute worse I've ever seen then comes Cobra. Garmin is good but way over priced. TomTom will get you where you need to be. In the end you just have to use a little bit of brains- sometimes TomTom is a few feet or yards off from your exact target. It might get you to the shopping center but you need to actually read the signs and drive to the exact store. Or it might get you to the residential street but you might be a few houses short of the exact house you are trying to get too. Not a big deal, your still the one driving right. Garmin seems to get the house dead on and even knows the side of the street, but I don't think it's worth a couple hundred bucks.
Tom Tom in France September 28, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I did my research on this unit and I had the most typical issue. Upon power up it just hangs at the splash screen. I was in a panic as I was to leave the USA in 2 days time. I researched the website and didnt find the exact symptom and resolution. I called the help line and was on hold for about 2minutes. The person on the other was American (no india help line) and walked me through the steps to correct the problem. I wanted to provide an explaination since most post dont list it. It appears that the latest build doesnt include all the necessary files for the system to boot up. So you have to Flash the device with the older version software and then upgrade to the newer version, both of which is on their website. The second upgrade is automatic when connected to the internet through the USB cradle. The upgrade took about 25minutes depending on your network connection speed. I used a cable modem. Now with a functioning Tom Tom I was off to France... The accuracy and detail of the maps was incredible. On the many traffic circles I could easily tell which exit to take. It would even tell me prior to the circle which exit I wanted. I never got lost. The regular Europe map was detailed enough. I was even in some remote areas, it worked great. It comes in handy to find places to eat nearby. Also saved me $100 when the gas station that Hertz told me to fill up the rental car was not there...The only one by the airport only takes France credit cards with the chip in them...no attendant just a machine to take credit card only. Last time I couldnt find the gas station and I was charged by rental car company $125 for 3/4 tank of gas...This time the fill up was $40 Euro. If you take the tram to go sight seeing the unit comes in handy since you will have to walk a distance to your destination. It is nice to save the tram station as a favorite so you can also get back home after walking around the city. I used GPS coordinates to set up the tram station. With just a few clicks I was able to come and go without anyones help. I learned the city better than some of the locals.. I plan in using it in the US too, just have had enough travel for now.. I didnt have a problem with the mount yet...that is the other common issue. I did connect the unit such that it would rest on the dash and not strain the mount. The unit is heavy and the G force the mount sees over time from road bounce can be huge.
A marriage saver September 26, 2007 I purchased the TomTom 910 after reviewing a number of GPS products in anticipation of a trip to France & Belgium. (My navigation skills are not what they were.) The fact that European maps are preloaded sold me. (GPS map software purchased separately is not cheap!) It performed entirely up to my expectations. Note: although it is portable & offers a pedestrian option, its "fatter" profile is not as convenient for hand carrying as other GPS's might be.
the Tom Tom Go 910 is good but it needs work September 21, 2007 After two weeks of experience in Idaho and Florida a navigation device like this is a wonderful assistant to have in the car. As a navigation aid it is hard to imagine anything better. BUT, the instructions are poor, the software that comes with the instrument (I'm talking of the OSMac software) is extremely slow. And finally there is a complete reset sequence together with another Tom Tom Clear software product that is necessary when the machine freezes. This has happened to me four times in two weeks - which seems excessive. Phone customer service is good: email customer service was very slow in responding.
