Great while the warranty lasts. A brick, once the warranty runs out. October 15, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The GPS worked flawlessly for at least a year - it was a bit of a marriage-saver, to be honest - and my wife and I are unanimous in that. But shortly after the warranty expired, the unit became completely useless due to what appears to be a permanent loss of satellite reception. As the Garmin website instructed me, I updated the software, performed a system reset - nothing worked. I called Tech Support, who were unaware of the problem and suggested that I send the GPS to them for repair. Since the warranty expired, the charge would be $200. I said "thanks, but no thanks!" (No, really!)
A quick search on the interwebs turned up many, many similar cases - a common scenario is that the Nuvi 660 unit just a couple of months outside of warranty permanently loses satellite reception and becomes a brick. One theory that I saw was that a diode between the antenna and the internals of the unit burns out, which means that the signal from the antenna never makes it in.
I'll be searching for a new GPS and in all likelihood, it will NOT be a Garmin.
Great GPS October 14, 2008 The Garmin nuvi 660 is a great GPS. I bought it for my mother-in-law. I was not familiar with GPS units and was concerned she would have problems "figuring it out" and using it. I got it a week ahead of her birthday, downloaded the latest maps (received great CS from Garmin) and had used it a few times so that I was familiar enough with it that I could answer her questions when she called. But after spending 10-15 minutes initially, she was using the 660 like a pro. She was even using the Blue tooth to connect to her Moto krazer cell phone.
A complaint I had is that the RF modulator did not seem to be powerful enough. I could not find a FM setting that was static free. Another small issue to note is that the microphone for using blue tooth with the cell phone isn't great. You wouldn't want to carry on a normal conversation for 10's of minutes, but it is useful for short conversations.
Overall a great and amazing machine. Just a few short comings that are not useless, but could work better.
only one thing wrong October 14, 2008 I bought this for my husband for his birthday. Since I thought a car charger was included, I wondered why I kept being offered one as an accessory. When it arrived, we found the charger that was included did not belong with the garmin I bought. How strange is that? Now I do have to buy something I thought was included. Otherwise, we like it.Garmin nüvi 670 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Best GPS for the price and features October 13, 2008 I recently relocated to the East coast and was having a hard time going around and visiting family in other states having to print out every address on Google maps or MapQuest. I was going to pull the trigger on the 205w that was at $[...] in the latest Costco coupons book. I started to do some research to compare prices and features until I got to the 350. Then I noticed a lot of forums comparing 350 vs. 66 This is my first GPS but I love the bigger screen (brighter), the text to speech is the best thing. Instead of just saying turn right in .2 miles it actually tells you the street names. You can't go wrong with this. It does synchronize your Bluetooth cell phone so you can drive and talk using your car speakers. And this device was sold a year ago for $[...]. It's still more than $[...] for a refurbished one. So this is the best deal for a new unit. You should be aware that the device comes with the suction cup, carrying case and 12-Volt adapter so there's no need to buy them separately. The unit has no hard copy instructions so at first I thought they sent the wrong (car charger)12v adapter and bought a usb type one. The problem was that this charger (not usb) connects to the suction cup behind the square area that holds the unit. If you want to charge the unit directly without using the suction cup you will need to buy a usb type charger. But no need to buy any accessories. The unit comes with everything you need. Now I will have 2 chargers. If you need a GPS unit ASAP this is the one... lowest price it has been (around$[...]). If you can wait I bet this price will go lower....at least $[...].
Garmin GPS October 13, 2008 The Garmin nuvi 660 is a great product. If you can find it , since it is discontinued, you will find it also at a great price. The Bluetooth feature is a plus.
