3 out of 5 stars just misses the mark   August 21, 2007

Works well when you're traveling in an area you don't know. It would be nice if you could create routes for areas you do know (or for trips where you've researched the routes you want to take). The traffic information isn't very reliable... and its ability to route around the traffic isn't very 'intelligent'. Trying to get traffic info for locations that aren't on the route the device has generated for you is more-or-less impossible. It would be nice if it gave you 'overall' route options when you first select your destination. Would also be nice if you could pick areas/stretches of road to 'block'. (I'm tired of it trying to take me near the Lincoln Tunnel during rush hour when I'm not trying to cross the Hudson!)

Having said all that, I'm happy with the device compared to what else is out there... but I think they have a long way to go. Somebody probably needs to combine the best features of everything on the market to make a half way decent product. (Sounds like the kind of thing Microsoft will probably try one day. Kinda hoping Google beats them to it!)

4 out of 5 stars Widescreen was worth it, Traffic and FM transmitter were not.   August 20, 2007

Things I like:
1. Intuitive navigation through the different screens. Very easy to tell it what you want to do. Easiest of any GPS system that I tested.

2. Widescreen - nice to see what turns are coming up on your route. If, for example, you have are coming up on a left turn at an intersection then you can look on the far side of the screen and "see" what will happen in the next few blocks, allowing you more time to get in the proper lane. Non-widescreen models don't show you as much of what will be going on after a turn.

3. Text to speech - Worth the extra money to get a model with TTS. My previous GPS did not have it and I will never again buy one without. Makes life much easier, even if it does the occasional mispronunciation of a street name.

Things that I thought were not worth the money:
1. Traffic receiver - In the San Diego area, I've found that the traffic data is too delayed to be useful. It will report traffic delays on areas I'm approaching even though there is no actual delay upon my arrival. It also fails to broadcast traffic delays that do actually exist. Most of the time the avoidance route (i.e. getting off the freeway) that it suggests would take longer than just toughing it out in the traffic. Additionally, the traffic receiver is built into the 12V adapter plug, making it exceptionally long and unwieldy as it sticks out of the dash.

2. FM transmitter - Allows the device to transmit audio over an unused FM band frequency to your car stereo. In practice I found it to be too full of static to be useful. Built in audio is plenty loud and clear without passing through car stereo. If your stereo has an aux input then you can just plug the headphone output of the nuvi directly into your stereo for much better reception.

Overall, if I was doing it all over again, I would have saved some money and bought the 650 instead of the 660. Would have meant giving up the bluetooth as well, but it is a sacrifice I'd have been willing to make.

5 out of 5 stars Great device   August 18, 2007

We had a friend who had a Garmin Nuvi and was so impressed with it, we decided to buy one. We are glad we did! We have had some issues with it on the highways whenever there are newer roads and it doesn't reflect that, or when we drive on a route that we know is a better route but the machine will want to take you some other way... we are learning to put "via route" points in if we know we want to go a certain way, then we just add that into the route... only a few minor issues but that's to be expected with roads changing often. I'm not sure how we would update any changes in roads but there's probably going to be a few "bumps" in using the unit but overall it's a great help... especially when you are going into an area that you are unfamiliar with... you just follow the prompts and you're there! It tells you you're expected arrival time on any trip which is helpful if you want to know how long it's going to take you to get there... either in the city or long distance... great investment... oh, and when you're in an unfamiliar area and need to find a restaurant you can look up those that are closeby and choose... it gives their address, phone number, so you're able to call and confirm that the information is correct, they're still open, and how much their prices are, etc. Great option... haven't used much else yet... but so far it's a wonderful purchase... highly recommended...

5 out of 5 stars The Garmin is Great   August 15, 2007

Just after purchasing the Garmin I went on a trip to Seattle and the San Juan islands. I was traveling by myself. A few weeks prior to the trip I had the second of my cataract surguries. My eyes started acting up shortly after getting off the plane from Atlanta. Blurring, tearing, ect.
I had programmed in my trip on the Garmin before I left and it lierally saved the day. I could not read maps, road signs etc but the step by step voice directions guided me effortlessly for the entire week I was away. It is easy to program, easy to use and it was a great experience in technology taking over the travel program
