4 out of 5 stars Not good for trip planning - excellent bluetooth speakerphone   July 16, 2008

I bought this unit for my daughter to use while driving around in the city. She loves it but I don't. It is excellent for the purpose of navigating from wherever you are to some destination. The screen is beautifully clear, the directions are excellent, and it is intuitive to use. The Bluetooth speakerphone exceeds my expectations. The sound is perfectly clear and the phonebook from the Motorola Razr V3 is presented perfectly on the screen.

However, some users my be disappointed. This unit has a shortcoming shared with most of the nav systems installed by auto manufacturers. It only allows navigation from point A to point B. There is no way to plan a route on a computer and then download it into the unit. I own several other Garmin products that have this desirable feature. I plan routes for motorcycle tours and it is absolutely necessary that I am able to plan a route on the computer and then load it into my GPS unit and the units of my tour riders. The same capability is important for people who want to plan family vacations. The entire Nuvi line suffers from this deficiency. The StreetPilot and Zumo lines from Garmin allow routes to be downloaded. The simple Garmin 18, which has no user interface whatsoever is a good alternative as well, if you are willing to carry your laptop with you. You can plan routes on the laptop and navigate with the Garmin 18 plugged into the USB port.

The Nuvi 660 is a great unit if it does what you want. Just make sure you know what you want it to do. I know one user who bought it and then found out he cannot download routes ito it. That was an expensive mistake for him.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent GPS   July 16, 2008
Garmin nuvi 660 GPS is very good. It tells me the direction very precisly. I would definitly recommend this product to others.

3 out of 5 stars Good but the touch screen has a lot to be desired   July 15, 2008
It's a good unit but the one thing most reviews I've ever read totally miss the boat on is the inferiority of the touchscreen (and to a somewhat lesser extent, the overall quality of the hardware itself). It is very last generation -- like Palm Pilot generation, and I am not joking. It is frequent that I have to press the touchscreen two, three even four times for it to register. I've used competing GPS systems from other manufacturers and they range from better to completely blowing it out of the water in this area. It's a shame that the Garmin 660 went the cheap route with a touchscreen that feels 2 or 3 generations behind. There are some other very small annoyances, but this one is the largest grievance for me. And I know there are a lot of you out there that -- in spite of all the legal warnings -- use the device while driving (I'm guilty as charged). Dealing with this sub-par touchscreen while driving will aggravate you, so be aware of this. Yes, as far as GPS routing and all the software functions/features, it is a GREAT device, but it gets 3.5 stars (can't do 3.5 on the star rating so it shows as a 3) because the hardware doesn't quite line up with the robustness of the software.

3 out of 5 stars CONSIDER THE NUVI 760   July 15, 2008

I own the Garmin C330. It has been discontinued for about a year now. That means that Garmin no longer will be providing upgraded software. I have been shopping for a new unit and have just about settled on the Garmin 760 which was introduced less than a year ago. This unit appears to be Garmin's replacement for its three year old "Best in Class" NUVI 660 which has received awards and top reviews since it was introduced. So, if you are researching gps units, you will see the NUVI 660 rated at the top of its category but if you shop around you will find that many big chains have stopped selling it because it probably is being retired. AZ has a great price on the NUVI 760. Reviewers say it comes with last year's maps but Garmin will update the map for free at its website if you update within 30 days of purchase. I check when the unit was introduced by checking the date of the first review. If the date is 2006, the manufacturer likely offers a newer version or has plans to phase out that unit. Three years appears about MAX for a GPS unit's manufacturing life. Note: Newly introduced units offer a new software/technology that locks onto satellites in seconds and tends to stay locked on better than the old technology.
