5 out of 5 stars One sweet navigator   August 17, 2007

I have used the tom tom one XL for 2500 miles in New England and the Chicago area. The Tom Tom One XL, while not flawless, is quite helpful and well worth the money.
Pros: good clear directions...able to adjust rapidly when you go off the recommended route...large enough screen to read the relevant info...colors and night dimming work well...tracking signal is rapidly acquired...simplified input of destination is helpful...Tom Tom doesn't sound irritated when you take a wrong turn
cons: infrequently will generate what seems to be inefficient routing which may cause up to a half mile detour...thus you have to be aware that your common sense may need to override the computer's instructions...you may be put in the position of deciding to follow the instuctions from Tom Tom or different routing from your spouse-navigator.

4 out of 5 stars Always check your address   August 13, 2007

There's some piece of mind in being in the car with TomTom. But always check your address. I live in Boston, and when I found Museum of Fine Arts as a pre-programmed destination, I chose it and set off to the galleries. But alas, it led me on some bizarre itinerary that I tried calmly to trust. It is, after all, a GPS. When I ended up on some back road in the middle of a Boston suburb and TomTom announced "You have reached your destination," I was less than pleased. It turns out that the MFA has a mailing address on that road. Well, TomTom, if you have this museum as a pre-programmed destination, the least you could do is make sure it's correct!! How frusterating! I've learned my lesson: I'll always enter an address, and never a point of interest again.

4 out of 5 stars Overall Very Solid and Worth the $   August 11, 2007

I just puchased the tomtom ONE XL and am already very impressed with it. I got it for $316 on eBay and it has been worth every penny. It has gotten me to and from everywhere and is impossible to get lost with. However there are pros and also cons.
PRO's:

Auto route recalculation- my favorite feature. YOu take a wrong turn and it will automatically get you back on track.

Points of interests - find gas stations, food, atms, etc.

The different ways you can tweak your trip. ex: avoid highways, scenic route, avoid certain roads.

PRECISE DIRECTIONS: the tomtom will even tell you what exit number to take or which lane to get in.

Time and reliability: The tomtom found me a new and much quicker way to the golf course saving me minutes off my trip.

CONS:

MOUNT: My #1 complaint is the mount that comes with the tomtom. It can be put either on the dashboard or the windshield yet the tom tom has fallen off from both positions. My Suggestion: BUY A SECURE MOUNT to place the tomtom wherever you want and prevent it from falling.

Battery life: I find myself charging the tomtom quite often

Charging port: hard to get the usb end of the cord into the tomtom (while driving)

Starting up: for some odd reason the tomtom will sometimes need a couple minutes to find a gps signal.

Other than that I am very pleased with the tomtom one XL
and I would highly RECOMMEND IT!

1 out of 5 stars waiting for valid gps signal......   August 4, 2007

I tried 2 of these brand new out the box and both of them would not work. I was even in a nice open area. I even left the unit on while driving back to return it and it would not work. All you get is waiting for valid gps signal forever. I will not buy another gps system by this company ever.

This is a great product. We have used it several times and it is accurate and gives lots of time for direction. We love it and highly recommend it. It was not the model GPS we thought we wanted to buy but decided to settle for this one and we're glad we did. Fast delivery for this product as well.
