4 out of 5 stars Very good product!   February 19, 2008

This is my first GPS so I have limited background. I have found it to be a very good product and particularly like the 3D view which indicates which lane to be in when a road splits.
The traffic reporting is quite limited as it just says the word "caution" but doesn't give any actual traffic report.
Sometime the routing is not the best as it does not take into account traffic patterns and stoplights so it may not be the fastest route when you consider that. That is ok when you know the area but when you go out of town, it may not take you the best route.
Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Great gps ,but it still needs some work   February 19, 2008

I purchased the navigon b/c of the free lifetime trafic reports and the realistic signs when it first came out , I still have not used the trafic reports. I also have a Garmin Nuvi 350. The Navigon is much better when navigating alone- it reminds you more often( compared to the Nuvi) when you need to turn. If I have someone in the car with me to help with the navigating I prefer the Garmin, otherwise always Navigon. The interface is not as easy to use as the Garmin, but if you know where you want to go (you have an address) it's easy to use. If I'm looking for something nearby my Garmin is easier to use to find that place. I'm not sure if Navigon has POI that you can load on like the Garmin.

4 out of 5 stars Navigon 7100 the good and bad   February 19, 2008
I purchased the unit 2 months ago. After carefully comparing to other brands, picked this one for following features - free traffic guidance live, built in Blue tooth speaker, and large quality touch screen.

GOOD - quality is evident in this unit. Mount is excellent. touch screen and day/night options are great and some of the nicest i've seen on any unit. Speed reminders are helpful and unit renders locations accurately. Traffic feature seems to work well and pops up when there is an incident ahead on your route.

BAD - 1. Battery life is terrible - only lasts a couple hours. I now keep the traffic monitor antena and charger permanently hooked up (and justplug in to dash when the battery light comes on to recharge). 2.Blue tooth speaker distorts and i can't hear on it if the vehicle is on the freeway (2006 chrysler minivan). Maybe with luxury car that is quieter, it would work on the freeway. This was very disappointing (this was one of the reasons i spent $150 more for this unit vs some competitor models). 3. POI menu is difficult (especialy if driving) and pretty much requires a stylus and pulling over. Even then it can be frustrating - i got to the hospital before i could get the unit to find it for me. 4. menu operation is not entirely intuitive, but can be learned with only a couple references to the PDF manual i downloaded to my home computer (there is no printed manual to take on the road).

3 out of 5 stars Not quite there...   February 14, 2008

The Navigon has a great screen and very likely the best voice guidance of any device. POI database is horrible and very out of date. UI is pretty, but not intuitive which may only be a problem if you only use it occasionally and then need to find some feature or function while driving. (Stress inducer!)

Finding locations is troublesome...it thinks my ZIP code is in a different city, and setting a destination by city/street/number sometimes doesn't work at all whereas number/street/city works every time. Weird. Free lifetime real-time traffic updates is what sold me, but you almost always have to use the supplemental antennae to get reception. It can also act as a bluetooth headset, but audio quality is poor. Its mounting arm is pure genius placing the device closer to you than any other I've seen and, its rock solid. Even though it is a "touch" screen, you almost invariably need to use its well-hidden stylus instead of your fingers.

So, a bit of a mixed bag. The good news is that it has no fatal flaws, the physical unit is nicely made and reeks of quality. The minor UI gripes could be fixed by a software upgrade. That is, if Navigon will ever provide one...and given the sorry state of the POI database and address logic...they need to, ASAP!

If I had known how good the voice guidance was, I would have opted for the smaller screen version and saved some money. Don't get me wrong; big screens are nice, but while driving, trying to decipher a map can be dangerous, while the loud clear voice prompts provide all the info you really need to get from point A to point B.

4 out of 5 stars needs some updates   February 13, 2008

the navigon 7100 works pretty well, it just needs an up to date map to work from, the local map has roads that were never completed and some that have been rerouted years ago. so far it has worked pretty good. the order through amazon was a very good experience, product was delivered on time and as discribed.
