5 out of 5 stars need more time to get to used the operation   January 5, 2008

I brought this GPS to replace my 350 carmin navi/06 version. I brought 7100 at around $340 after mailing rebate at Amazon. After using 7100 for one month, I feel that I like it more than my old carmin 350. I like it cool design, Traffice infor, and 3D view. Admittedly, the down side of the 7100 is the interface that is not as user-friendly as my old carmin. However, after using 7100 about a week, I don't think that is a issue for me.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased   January 5, 2008

First, this is my first navigation device, so I can not compare it to other devices. I am absolutely pleased with this product. I have read many of the other reviews and must admit that I was initially apprehensive about my purchase. I have owned it a week and have used it throughout Los Angeles. Yes, on occasion it has some strange routing, but it is my understanding that many of the other manufactures have similar problems.

I leave my unit in standby mode when powering it down so I have not experienced the long start up times that others have seen. Recalculating of route has been very quick in my experience. The free traffic is awesome and works well. The interface is beautiful and the buttons maybe a bit small, but once you get used to it, it's no problem to use.

The software is easy to use and quick to figure out. I read a comment that you had to be a rocket scientist to figure it out, this must have been posted by an idiot. The reality view is extremely useful. The pronunciation of street names and cities is off, but who cares, you can figure it out pretty quick.

Like I said, this is my first, so I can not compare it to others. A good friend of mine has had Garmin and TomTom and he likes his new Navigon better as well.

Hope this helps.

4 out of 5 stars Great product with plenty of room for improvement   January 4, 2008
Pros:
- Real time traffic works great (I live in NY/NJ area). Its only been 3 weeks since I bought this GPS, and it already saved me time. I initially wondered if the traffic alerts I was receiving were real (i.e., if you trust the traffic alert and choose to avoid traffic, it may take you to a route with no traffic. But how do you know if there was traffic on the original route?). I learned it the hard way earlier this week. I was driving on Garden State Parkway, and received a traffic alert about an accident 10 miles ahead on me. The road seemed clear and I thought that the alert was wrong so I continued driving. A few miles before the exit indicated in the alert, the parkway looked like a big parking lot! I then choose to avoid traffic and it asked me to take the next exit, which took me 45 minutes. Next, it took me through local roads and asked me to take the parkway again. To my surprise, that point was exactly where the contention ended, saving me at least an hour. I could have saved another 45 minutes if I trusted the initial alert. Kudos Navigon!
- Reality view works great and is very useful

Cons:
- Signs in the reality view and the map (as well as the voice) are often out of sync (i.e., if you take I-80 from NJ Turnpike, the voice still thinks that you are taking 95 whereas the reality view shows I-80. Similarly, the voice sometime says "8080" instead of "80" whereas the reality view shows the correct signs)
- Some abbreviations are mis spoken. Prime example is George Washington bridge which is shown as G. W. Bridge (which is not bad), but the voice calls it "G. West bridge". It seems like "W." is always treated as "west" which can be wrong
- The default (i.e., optimal) routing is horrible. "Fast" routing is better. Don't think I need to say more as too many already complained about it
- Bluetooth is unusable. Other have already complained about the phone book sync. I am also not happy with the voice quality of incoming calls. They are basically non hearable, even with full volume

3 out of 5 stars Good Hardware, Pathetic Software   January 4, 2008

PROS:
GPS acquisition, bluetooth, feature-rich

CONS:
Unacceptable routing and other annoying problems (all software-related)

I bought this unit thinking I would keep it and show-off really! It looks very sleek. GPS acquisition is very quick and solid. Bluetooth works as advertised, pairing was a breeze. Inbuilt mic is excellent and so is the voice quality.

The problems arised when you try to use what you really bought it for... navigation! Strong GPS acquisition means nothing if the routing is bad to start with. Even worse the unit assumes that it is on a certain road whereas you really are on the other road of an intersection. TMC never really worked outside my home! On one instance it was asking me to make a right and the device actually showed me that I had to go straight! I was pretty familiar with the place and knew that I had to go straight.

Biggest problem was getting out of a parking lot! You would get to an intersection and the device would assume you are already on the specific road (and facing in the wrong direction!!!!) and re-route you.

Many POIs fail to show up when you search for "nearby" points of interest even though it is in the database. I wrote to Navigon regarding these and got some standard replies (are you sure you had GPS signal etc.) and was finally asked to call them. The representative asked me send them photos of some issues which I did but never heard back! The product went back to the store as a result. I hear they would be having a map update and a firmware update soon but I am not sure if they will have addressed all issues in the update. As I mentioned, the hardware is excellent and its not surprising given that it has a sirfstar III engine but the software needs more maturity. Seems like they hurried it into the market in time for holiday shopping without testing the produce sufficiently.

5 out of 5 stars Works Great   January 2, 2008

Purchased this product even though most of the comments seemed negative. I decided to go with the German technology versus the China imports etc.
My first trip was from upstate NY to Maine and the product performed flawlessly. Going down the NY State Thruway approximately twenty miles before Albany NY the Navigon warned me of a car in the breakdown lane some miles ahead, also I was given an early warning before one of the exits on the Mass. Pike informing me of construction on my route and the Navigon unit asked if it would be ok to reroute. I figured the workers wouldn't be working in the evening and the rush hour was over so I declined. Well the workers were working but again there was little traffic so it was not a inconvience.
I was amazed at how quickly the unit can get you back on route. Coming back home I turned down a different street to see how the unit would respond, and even though it was a very short steet the Navigon told me before I traveled a half a block to turn left at the next intersection. Another thing that surprised me was that it found a shortcut while I was driving to my friends camp. I didn't know it existed as it was just a dirt road but, it cut off a half mile off the route. One other thing that I liked was the short time that it took to acquire satellites. Right out of the box it does take some time but once it has them locked on there locked on. I was able to take my unit into the house and work with it in my den with the unit still tracking satellites the unit will react the same inside my camp. So far I am very pleased with the unit and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
