4 out of 5 stars Navigon 7100   December 19, 2007

I do like this product, it has all the requirements for a GPS system. The free traffic is always up-to-date and very convenient to avoid those traffic jams.

The only draw back is the US Navigon techical support, as they direct you to the European sites. Also the web site is coming up to speed to support US. But generally I am happy with the product.

4 out of 5 stars Great and possible the best value right now but needs some improvements   December 18, 2007

Cons: 1. some buttons and text are absurdly too small. It seems function is sacrificed for form.
2. Point of Interest data base is far from up-to-date and may take a several minutes to complete a search while leaving user wondering what and if it's doing anything.
3. Screen redraw lags actual position. Strangely, this does not happen all the time.
4. With U-turn feature turned off the units still instructs driver to make a U-turn.
5. map data will be obsolete in early 2008 when new map data will be available. Navigon stated that it has not yet determined how much it will cost to upgrade map data. Some posters here falsely spread rumors that map upgrade is free.

Pros: 1. Relatively inexpensive compared to Garmin but has more features.
2. bluetooth phone interface is easy to make and phone voice sounds clear.
3. TMC traffic report feature is free with no subscription ever, and it works great in the DC area.

Over all, I'm pleased with this unit. I own several GPS including TomTom, Honda Odyssey Navigation (which costs lots of money to upgrade map data), Garmin, Lowrance, and others. I must say Navigon 7100 is my favorite so far for the money, although, like all others, it's not perfect.

I hope Navigon will put more thoughts into buttons and text sizes and graphical interface in its next firmware upgrade that will supposedly be released in early 2008.

UPDATE: New software was downloaded after receiving a notice of new software available. Noticeable improvements are: POIs are a little easier to find with more categories to choose from, no more unwanted U-turns. The DISAPPOINTMENTS still are: inexplicably narrow/small touch-screen "buttons" for frequently used "buttons" and features, unnecessarily small text where it could be much much bigger and more legible, confusing and unintuitive to get back to navigation map, new software seems to make map redrawing much slower, even when moving at slow speed, night time screen mode is still too bright when brightness is set at its dimmest setting.

One notable disappointment was that traffic information sometimes is not current. I got stuck sitting in unusually heavy traffic because the traffic information for my selected destination/route failed to report it. Most of the time, traffic information is up to date and Navigon 7100 would ask if an alternate route is preferred due to detected traffic conditions ahead.

My verdict is that TOMTOM and Garmin have much better user interface. I would not recommend anyone with unsteady arm/hand and poor eye sight and inexperienced with navigation systems to buy this product.

5 out of 5 stars So far, very good   December 18, 2007

I bought my 7100 a few day ago. I'm a gadget freak, so I had little problem getting it going and although I was growing frustrated with the onscreen calibration (you do the routine on the screen probably 20 times), it really made a big difference.

I, too, have noticed some long routing, but then I noticed I had the choice for routes on "optimum" instead of fast. Haven't noticed a problem since. While it does tend to send you only on the main roads at first choice, I also found that with my Garmin which froze and was not resettable after two days of use. What I really did like was that I could see for about three miles ahead on the 3-D graphic screen so I could figure out another route.

Maybe I have a newer model or something, but it gathers my satellites within ten seconds. The voice is a female with a European accent, which I would like to change but haven't figured out how to do.

Where I purchased my 7100 allows for 14 days after Christmas for a cash refund, so there was little risk. So far, the 7100 is doing great for me.

We are first time users for a GPS. We love our Navigon. We bought it after much shopping. It is easy for us beginners! Very clear and the voice instructions are great! It got us old timers through the middle of Salt Lake City at rush hour with no problem!

THE GPS IS VERY HARD TO SET A DESTINATION AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO FIND A RESTAURANT TO EAT AT IT WILL ONLY SHOW THE ONE'S IN A 0.3 MILE AREA.
YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO BRING UP A MAP AND TELL IT TO FOLLOW THIS DIRECTION.
AND AS FOR THE FREE TRAFFIC WELL I HAVEN'T HAD IT HELP ME YET AND I WAS IN DALLAS TRAFFIC SITTING FOR 45 MINS. MY OLD GARMIN WAS GOOD BUT I WANTED TO UP DATE THIS UNIT DOSEN'T DO IT.
