5 out of 5 stars Garmin 2820 Best Choice   January 28, 2007

We chose this unit for the diversity it offered. We use it in our truck but also mount it on the motorcycle. It works well on both and keeps us on track. It is easy to use and is not complicated to program.

Let me start by saying the 2820 is a complete and terrific GPS however if you already own a Garmin 2720, 2620 or any other model with pre-loaded maps don't bother investing in the 2820. I own a 2620 and thought the traffic warning and blue tooth was worth the upgrade. Well as they say in Joisey "fuhgetaboutit". First you need to purchase an extra antenna at about $230,the traffic alert requires an extra XM radio subscription at $13 a month and once you sign up you will find out that the service is only available in limited areas. The blue tooth doesn't work with most cell phones out there (although the very newest ones will) and the 3D screen is not worth the expense of upgrading. Let me say further that I don't blame garmin, I blame myself for not researching better. The information was out there and if I did my homework I would still be using my 2620. If you do not own a GPS do not let this information give you a bad image of Garmin. In my opinion you CAN NOT OWN A BETTER PRODUCT!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome All-In-One   January 22, 2007

I had a Nuvi before this and loved it - Garmin makes the best GPS's - but didn't like having a seperate device for my XM Radio (Samsung Nexus). I tried the 2820 and absolutely love it - in addition to the awesome screen, and complete GPS feature-set (more than the Nuvi), the XM radio is great. The Artist Scan feature is better than on any other radio!

I have a Garmin 2610 and really like it but the wife had a hard time using it. Got the 2820 for her as a Christmas present and she learned how to use it and loves it! I just wish they would include the XM radio antenna with it, or it was a cheap add on not almost $200!

4 out of 5 stars Garmin Street Pilot 2820   January 19, 2007

I've had the 2820 for a month now and have taken several trips, some where I've known the route and a few where we were charting new ground. For the most part the street pilot performed well and we got to the destination. However, when I used it to guide me to locations I'd been to previously it didn't always take me the way I thought it should. Eventually the Street Pilot recaluated the route and would catch up to the way I was going which during past travels I had determined was the fastest way. Regardless it performed very well.

In one case we tried to program the Garmin to a location it didn't recognize, even though when we got there it had all the streets etc. and provided acurate directions to other locations from that spot. I e-mailed the cartography department and advised them of what I saw and they were prompt in responding with a solution that when I programmed it, it got me to the location I was looking for.

I noticed that if your programming an alternate route and use cities as data points along the route the Garmin wants to take you to the center of the city you use as the data point. I'm sure there is a way to program the Garmin so it doesn't do that, but I haven't had the time to figure out exactly how to do that level of trip programming. If in fact there isn't a way you'll just get used to hearing the speaker continually say "Recalculating Route". Thats just a minor annoyance for the benefit of having the Street Pilot.

Sometime you may need to search cities near where you want to go to get directions. I was looking for Tierre Verde Florida, but needed to type in St. Petersburg. Regardless it worked and the cartography department was quick to respond.

Overall I'm impressed with the Garmin and my next purchase will be the XM receiver that will manuver me around traffic tie ups. This product gets my recommendation.
