Good and Reliable March 6, 2008
I bought this from amazon after having a real bad experience with the Navman 300 which I got from Marshalls. The Navman 300 had a weak display that would cut in and out and the device at times would freeze up and would not display the correct pace. This all happened to me while I was running in the 2007 L.A. Marathon; which brings us to the Garmin Forerunner 101.
I returned the stupid Navman 300 and got the Garmin Forerunner 101. The Garmin Forerunner 101 is solid. Just put it on, establish a signal, hit the start button and you're off. It has a super clear display. It even has a button to light up the screen for a few seconds if you're running at night so you could see the display. The signal is decent but not great. If you want to start it up indoors while you're getting ready to run, forget about it. Go outside and wait 2-5 minutes. You'll get used to this, it wasn't a big issue for me. But you have to make sure you're not running or walking in a heavily populated area of tall trees, or else it'll lose the connection with the satellites. I used this Garmin 101 in the 2008 L.A. Marathon and was impressed. I used the "virtual partner" mode to finish within my desired time that I set as my goal. While I failed miserably(although I still finished, barely), I realized that this device is more than just a distance calculator. It can really help you track your progress and reach your goals if you put in the effort(which I didn't). It has many other modes that I haven't used yet. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because of the inability to hook this up to a computer and transfer your stats. But for under a $100, I can live with that.
Excellent tool for monitoring jogging progress February 7, 2008
The Forerunner 101 offers the ability to use replaceable AAA batteries. I use a set of NiMH rechargeable AAA batteries that last for about 1-2 weeks worth of running. The GPS takes awhile to lock onto a signal from a cold start. The longest it has taken was about 5 minutes! So I recommend going outside and stretch while the unit "warms up". Sometimes if I face Due West, the signal locks on faster.
The Forerunner 101 does not work inside most buildings, but it does work well in a car to track your GPS speed. The mapping feature is an interesting tool, albeit crude.
The Forerunner logs your mileage, calories burned, and average speeds.
 Great basic GPS January 12, 2008
So far I love my GPS. I didn't need anything fancy or complicated to use and this does exactly what I need as a runner. It accurately records my mileage as I run. I live in a very small town and have not had any problems with GPS signals.

Good beginner gps for running December 2, 2007
I had my Garmin 101 for 3 years. I just upgraded to the 205. If you are looking for a good entry level gps and trainer for running, walking, etc. this is it. Enough bells and whistles to keep you going for a while. The only draw back is if you live more urban and get stuck in those "concrete valleys", this will loose contact with its satellites. But runnning for 3 years in Denver with it was great. I've moved to a more urban area and wanted a more robust receiver. If you need that, get the 205.
