5 out of 5 stars Tom Tom Tom A Winner   April 26, 2008
I ordered the Tom Tom 720 on a Tuesday and it arrived on Thursday. It's a great little gizmo, smart and easy to use- I love it. The installation etc took quite a while but patience paid off.

2 out of 5 stars I really tried to like the TomTom 720 - but does not hold a candle to the Garmin 660   April 25, 2008

After reading reviews on both the Garmin 660 and TomTom 720, I decided to try both. Today took them on a trip of about 200 miles round trip mounted side by side. There has been a ton of information written about both units, so I won't go into a lot of details.

Bottom line, the TomTom doesn't even come close to the Garmin in usability. Here is a list of a few of the issues I had with the TomTom.

1- Mount is cheap and flimsy.
2- Unit difficult to slip into mount - can't see mounting guide on back of unit to slip the unit on easily.
3- Power plugs into unit, not mount - a pain
4- Tried to route me on a street that didn't exist.
5- Routed me on a street that dead ended, which would not allow me to get to destination.
6- Does not have my local airport listed (Stuart, Florida).
7- Screen washed out in the sunlight - Garmin considerably brighter and sharper.
8- Map details lacking. Had a lot of POI's, but of little use as could not use the icons to navigate to them.
9- TomTom shows turn arrow and highway number, but not name of highway you are going to turn on. Garmin does.
10- Blackberry 8800 would not connect using Bluetooth.
11- Home Connect software installed ok, but TomTom would not connect using the Home Connect software.
12- Has fairly short battery life compared to Garmin.
13- Traffic not included and traffic option requires separate cable that plugs into bottom of unit - a pain.
14- Need a hospital in a hurry? You are out of luck because under "hospitals", the TomTom lists every clinic known to man. It does not identify true hospitals, a major issue in an emergency. The Garmin only lists hospitals.
15- TTS very poor compared to Garmin.

What did I like about the TomTom?
- It has a QWERTY keyboard - the Garmin does not.
- It allows you to display a lot of data on the screen.

Why should you steer clear of the TomTom?
- Very poor screen in sunlight - almost could not read.
- Routing could be a big issue.
- Hospital issue - a major issue to most of us.

Before you buy, try them both side by side in your car. You will be amazed at the difference in the displays.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Map   April 25, 2008

I have used the unit for 3 months now. I concur on numerous reviews mentioning its strength, here just wanted to comment on the map. I live in a brand new neighborhood part of which is still building as of today. Its exactly one year yesterday that we closed on the house. At which time the block was just half way completed. In the same month I got TT, I also had a Navigon 7100 (costco) and Nuvi 650 (amazon). Both showed a big green blank area, but TT has every street that is there as of today. I am not sure if it has the map factory installed, or thru TT Home update made by other people, or if I got an old unit from Navigon & Garmin, but it is just great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent purchase   April 17, 2008

I have had other GPS units for both driving and hiking, but needed an upgrade for the car. After comparing with the Garmin brands, decided to get the TomTom GO 720. It is extremely easy to use; the user interface is very intuitive. Bluetooth feature and FM transmitter work as expected. Mapping, while not always finding the route I would take in my local area, does the job perfectly. I am very happy with my purchase.

Two things you must get after purchase. First are screen protectors to prevent scratching. Simple solution is go to the local office store and buy the ones for palm pilots. You get 5 to a pack for a pretty low price and they are just about the same size screen (a tad bit smaller). Second is a case. I would suggest a hard-shell type.

UPDATE:
After using this for a bit, the re-routing function is the fastest I have ever seen. Miss a turn, it knows and suggests a reroute almost instantly. A really great feature.

Over all functionality wise, it performs well. A few things come to mind that i didn't like. First, i went to my brothers home a new development, almost two yrs. old.,and all of the streets didn't so up. The 720 said it has the most up to date maps but i supposed not. Another time it thought that there was a road in witch there was a dead end that has been there for 30 yrs.
A friend bought a Garmin 760 the time did and the only thing i found different was that the tom tom 720 picked up the satellites much quicker then the Garmin. Its a good tool. BWB
