Best bang for the buck out there January 29, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this for my wife for Christmas based upon the recommendation from our son. We could not be happier. The Nuvi 260 is the perfect balance of features for the price. It is the lowest price Garmin that will pronounce street names, a feature that is essential in residential areas. Its small size, along with a beanbag friction type mount make it perfect to move from vehicle to vehicle or even more important, to be able to secure in the trunk. The screen size is plenty large enough to see without a problem. Cound not be happier.
Garmin GPS System January 28, 2008 I purchased the Garmin nuvi 260 GPS portable Navigator System. It is easy to operate and works very well. It is very accurate and provides voice assistance.
A real stress reliever January 26, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I purchased this GPS to replace the less-than-stellar offerings I've had on my Palm. One motivating factor for purchasing it at this time was a planned trip to Pittsburgh, PA, which has some of the most confusing roads of anywhere I've been. I decided to delay my review until I had a chance to try it out in Pittsburgh.
The unit has been excellent! More than once it got us back to where we needed to go when we took a wrong turn (or no turn when we should have). It seems that every time I thought "I wish it would do" something, I found out that it did. The text-to-speech is also very intelligible. However, one of the biggest pluses is that my wife, who normally has problems with all but the simplest user interfaces, had no problems interacting with it while I was driving. We were both also very pleased with the speed at which it computed routes.
I have no qualms about giving this product 5 stars, something I don't do unless a product is nearly perfect. Great job, Garmin!
Update: After I originally posted my review, we were leaving Pittsburgh and at one point the GPS attempted to direct us the wrong way down a one-way street. Upon further investigation, I determined that this was not an issue with the Nuvi per se but with the NAVTEQ database; Google Maps also uses NAVTEQ as its data source and attempted the same wrong-way routing. I have reported the discrepancy to NAVTEQ.
Also, while traveling back home, I managed to lose part of the car mount I took along, a combination of the cradle from the included suction mount and the arm from the optional friction mount. Those parts are not normally available separately, but Garmin stepped up to the plate when I contacted them, shipping me a new suction mount and dash mount (which uses the same rotating arm the friction mount uses) free of charge.
Comparison with Other GPSs January 24, 2008 I am a gadget geek and own 6 GPSs. This latest Nuvi series is the best I have found if you simply want to get to your destination, and want user friendlyness. I think it is a bit better in this respect than the Tom Tom. I also have a Lowrance 500c. The Lowrance is big, heavy, runs hot [will trip off in hot sun], touch screen does not work as well, no battery, & is not near as user friendly. The Nuvi is easier to use-it is so intuitive that you dont need the user manual. The Nuvi turns itself on and off automotically, adjusts to day and night screens automtically. Also you neeed a battery, - so you can take it to a PC easily and program locations in for a long vacation. Also the unit finds satellites quicker than the lowrance, and in sub zero temps, it reponds to startup and touch screen prompts via your finger just like it would in warm weather. The others are not near as good as this. Also make sure you buy a dash mounted, four legged 'bean bag' mount by Garmin. Forget the suction cup on the windshield approach, also illegal in CA & MN. Trust me on this point, the suction cup does not work well long term. I own Three Nuvi's [one for Son] the Europe maps on the 270 model are great, and will save you on that EU vacation. Also have your favorite destinations preprogrammed, and forget the rental car unit, especially in the EU, you never know IF and what the rental people will give you, and can be a GPS that speaks French or Italian and fights reprogramming. The one feature to be aware of is Voice pronuciation of the upcoming street name ['turn left' vs. 'turn left on Oak St.] some Nuvi models have it, some don't. But the street is written on the screen for all models. This is a nice feature but you pay more.
Garmin nuvi 260 January 24, 2008 Excellent product! Easy to use -- no need to read instructions when using the first time. Text-to-speech feature is great!
