4 out of 5 stars Small but clear screen, excellent routing   December 29, 2005

There are lots of helpful remarks in the previous reviews. I'll just add that the "3-d" view provided by this and other Garmin units seems much easier to use with a quick glance than the top-down views on other units. Other than the size of the screen, this unit is superior to the nav system that came in my '03 Toyota Prius in every regard. It's very easy to use. I should mention that my unit arrived about two weeks ago with system 2.1 on it. During our first trip using it, the unit froze while we were heading down Route 1 in central NJ. Power cycling it got us back on track, and we've no other problems since. However, I just looked on the Garmin website and found that the current system for this unit is 3.2, as of December 6. Updating the system software on my PC in the office was quite simple, and I'm glad that the unit will be (presumably) more stable than ever.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks a Couple of Features:   December 26, 2005

I'm not a gadget person, but I sprung for the Garmin C340 after reading about the ease of use. True, the unit is very easy to use, very intuitive.

However, it lacks a couple of features:

1. (THIS IS WRONG -- SEE CORRECTION BELOW). It does not give you the distance remaining for your trip, only an estimated TIME remaining. I can't believe that with all of the technology in this thing it can't tell you how far you have to go. (Maybe I'm not smart enough to find that feature).

2. It doesn't have airports in the places section, nor can you type in the airport name as an address. I tried every way possible to get La Guardia Airport as one of my favorite destinations, but it wouldn't recognize it. I also tried under addresses, but it only responds to a street name, not "La Guardia" or "La Guardia Airport". Then I got Queens on the map and tried to select the words "La Guardia Airport" but no luck. I had to type in the address, which by the way was a project of its own. It seems that the address is simply "La Guardia Airport, Flushing, NY", which the Garmin does not recognize. Finally, I went to Google Maps and spotted "Central Terminal Dr." at the airport, and this finally worked. To me, this is silly.....I should be able to just type in the airport name and the Garmin should be able to figure it out.

3. The power plug should plug into the actual unit instead of that silly bracket.....what if I don't want to use the bracket? I have to bring it along solely for power???

UPDATE and CORRECTION:

My complaint in #1 above is incorrect. The unit DOES INDEED tell you how far you have to go, you have to push the bottom left arrival time and then look at all of the data (miles to go is at the top right near the finish line flag).

HOWEVER, my unit has now frozen up on me three times in the Weschester and New York City area. I understand there is a software update which I am going to try. I am considering returning the unit. Still not sure.

4 out of 5 stars A Big Time Winner......Love It   December 22, 2005

I have been using GPS products for over 15 years, primarily in a boating application. Most of that experience is with Garmin, and some with Furuno. I also have quite a bit of automotive GPS experience, as we have had at least one vehicle for the last 4 years with factory GPS installation.

For the last 2.5 years, my experience is with my wife's Infiniti GPS. You would think with it being an Infiniti that it should be a good set-up, but it is not intuitive, and there is a long sequence of actions one must perform just to punch in the address of a destination.

This C340 by Garmin is just great. It is so intuitive, that even a novice will be up and running in about 5 - 10 minutes. The touch screen is great, and no need for a user's manual whatsoever. They really made this thing fool-proof. Apart from the obvious benefit of taking you where you want to go, this unit has a great selection of restaurants, and a feature that allows you to interrupt your route, stop at a restaurant, and then get you back on course.

This unit is not only nice because of what it does, but also because of what it does not do. It does not try to show you too much of the map, which would be a problem because the screen is not real big. Granted, the Infiniti display is nicer, but that is where the advantages end. I recommend the c340, and do not regret the $650 I just dropped on it.

I also have to throw some praise at Amazon, as this unit got to me in three days at the regular rate. Great job.

3 out of 5 stars mostly great hardware, but software not for the experts   December 2, 2005

The system gets you there, & text to speech is fantastic. but the unit rarely picks the route that one believes it should , but rather suggests an alternate. Where we live it is invariably the case that it does not pick the best route. Unlilke other units, there is no method of requesting it to suggest an alternative. Likewise if one hears on 1010 am or wherever of impending traffic jam up along the way, one cannot direct it to pick another route until one is very close to the scene (where it has the limited functinality detour button), by which time it is too late to do anything sensible. My wife has a factory fitted model, which allows you to continually request the system to pick an alternate for any point in its route. a benefit we have availed ourselves of constantly.

The hardware is very convenient. It sticks to the windscreen like glue, & is completely portable with battery operated system so no unsightly wires, another plus. On downside, it takes time to calibrate its position if you have moved the car since switiching it off, & is far slower at refreshing than a factory fitted. The lighting is very good. A software update fixed the periodic freezing of the system.

So overall, effective at ensuring you get to your destination, but not necessarily in an optimal way, & no use at avoiding traffic you are alerted to. If you dont want or need the ability to request alternative suggestions, this is a good choice.

3 out of 5 stars Great unit but no satelite signal in manhattan, confused with North and South   November 27, 2005

The Garmin c340 is a great unit now that Garmin finally fixed The lockup problem with the firmware update on there site.however,i find that the unit loses its satelite signal when i am in Manhattan(maybe because of the tall buildings, but other GPS systems seem to work there),as soon as i get to the theatre district there is no signal,I emailed Garmin and they said to get an external antenna(isnt it easier for them to just fix the problem, also, the unit gets confused when you are on a service road next to a highway,it does not know which one you are on and recalculates,i still love my 340, but not in Manhattan. Since the firmware update, the voice directions also get confused with north and south, several times i was going north and it was correct on the screen but the voice said we were going south and vica versa.
