1 out of 5 stars GOOD WHILE IT LASTED...but 18 months later it is WORTHLESS   October 9, 2008

Up until it stopped working I used to refer to this little device as "the best thing I ever bought." It stopped being able to lock onto a satellite and after following the tech support advice, it still doesn't work. Of course, Garmin was gracious enough to offer me a refurbished one for $175. THANKS BUT NO THANKS!!! You can buy a NEW one for $175. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER GARMIN TO REPLACE SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE LASTED MORE THAN 18 MONTHS.

I researched, studied, and compared many GPS units before I chose the 350. I was a first time buyer so I had to educate myself. I relied on customer reviews to help me narrow my choices and decide on the 350. I put it to the test just days after purchase and after updating the maps. On vacation I exited the interstate for a cup of Starbucks and the 350 had me on the complete opposite side of the highway. I found it the old fashion way, driving in circles. I had several other instances with the same issue while on vacation. I also used the 350 to download books. I am a police officer and spend many hours working off duty jobs sitting in my unit. This is an excellent feature to have for this purpose. While listening to a book this week the speakers went out. I can listen to books with headphones but as far as listening to "Jill" give directions, no more. Amazon will not accept returns after 30 days so if you buy, use someone who will back their products. I saved cash using Amazon. Now I have to spend more if I want another to replace the 350. Don't waste time or money on this older unit. You get what you pay for.

4 out of 5 stars better, but   October 9, 2008
I first owned a Street Pilot 350 which is the large unit....it was ok, but took routes that I knew to be circuitous and unnecessary sometimes...it also didn't have updated maps for my area...
Now I have the Nuvi 350 which has good mapping, better routing, screen brightness, and is much smaller....The only thing that I really don't like is the volume of the voice directions. Even at the loudest volume, it can't be heard very well, and forget about having music on when your trying to listen to it! I was told by Garmin that the street pilot 350 because of the size; the speakers were on the side and now the nuvi 350 speaker(s) are on the back...maybe that has something to do with it...but still, I don't see how this unit is ok with most people because of the volume thing....

4 out of 5 stars Generally good but have some drawbacks   October 9, 2008
To use this GPS is quite easy, here I just would like to point out some of its cons.
1. It does not have a next turn arrow at the bottom of the screen to help you decide which lane you should drive on. At the time the voice tell you "in point 3 miles turn right/left at...", sometimes you do not have enough time to change the lane. to learn the turn direction in advance, you must touch the screen at bottom right, sometimes it's disturbing and making you not being able to concentrate while driving. (I'm a new driver)
2. The time to accquire the satellite signal when you travel to another place is quite slow, sometimes it takes 10 minutes or even longer.
3. It only remember the state of the address you input last time, not the city, each time you need to input your city even most of the time you just travel in the same city. It'll be better for it to be able to remember the several cities you inputted in the same state and let you choose.

This is the first GPS I bought. I used some of my friends' before, no one is perfect. For the money I paid for this one ($200), I think it's quite fair.
