Don't leave home without it!! April 19, 2007 I've had this unit for about 6 mo. and I'm extreemly pleased, well worth the $550 I paid on Amazon. I've taken local and long distance trips, in car, van and motorhome. Very easy to use right out of the box, easy to see in the motorhome at distances greater then in a car, even with my sixty year old eyes. We live about 30 miles from Fort Worth and occasionally go into the city, we have used it to find banks, stores and places to eat. On a recent trip to Phoenix, AZ the guidance was especially helpful, I really appreciated the early warning to navigate the freeway interchanges, when to get in the left lane for left exit or how far to next change. On the trip it was helpful to find places to eat. On business trip to Houston I find the ETA info helpful to plan meetings. The remote is helpful in the motorhome, but I knocked off one star becouse of funky power cord connection, and no FM modulator.
almost great March 12, 2007 this is a great unit- Garmin is the best , but the speaker is a joke- there is no fm modulator built in -so you listen to xm and mp3's with the tiny speaker attached to the cig lighter. Previous model has the modulator but no blue tooth for phone. Nuvi has fm modulator, blue tooth but no xfm! I had to return mine because it kept resetting every time I turned it off- just a fluke- I've been using Garmin's for 5 years and never had a mechanical problem before.
Review of navtraffic and XM interface only March 11, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Good: Gamin GPS Bad: Navtraffic routing and XM interface
I purchased this unit to navigate between hospitals in SoCal to avoid traffic. Other reviews cover the mapping and GPS capabilities better than I so I'm sticking with traffic and XM. The traffic navigation is only so-so. The system has saved me time and frustration but it also has lead me off the freeway and other bad routs when staying on the freeway would have been a better option. I often leave the house around 8:30 and I know traffic will loosen up by the time I get to troubled spots, I do not follow the units suggestions because the unit does not update fast enough to take changing road conditions into account plus the I feel the traffic info the unit receives or poor quality (problem with Navtraffic not Garmin and hopefully only in Los Angeles/Orange County). The new software provides ETA taking into account traffic, which leads me to believe the info, is inaccurate. The system suggests leaving the freeway which I do not think is advisable so I continue on the freeway and the system immediately recalculates my ETA which turns out to be earlier then taking surface streets. I have been redirected off the freeway with good results but this is not always the case. The feature to manually bypass traffic is terrible. The worse example was seeing traffic ahead, I asked the unit to bypass the traffic and the unit suggested staying on the freeway and driving 100 miles than turning around and returning. System software 6.4 showed traffic in all map modes, but 7.0 no longer shows traffic unless several keys strokes are made to show the low res traffic map. Garmin's explains the change "Emphasize relevant traffic on the main map by only showing traffic on your route or the road ahead of you"; let me translate: 'our traffic info in so bad we do not want to it make convenient to find'. Garmin/Navtraffic does rout trips with both freeway and street traffic data but I have not find how to display street traffic to bypass the units auto routing to use my judgment in routing.
After six months using the device I learned how to "dance" with the traffic routing. Now I use my experience to rout my trip as I had done before owning the device and when I see traffic, either on the map or in front of me, I leave the freeway and then use the device to find an alternative rout. I do not follow the advice of the device from the get go since the traffic data is poor and the software does not anticipate changing traffic patterns. I wish I could return the unit for a full refund. The XM interface is poor with limited info and only six presets (a total of 18 exist but they take two menus to find) and those buttons are too small to accurately hit in a moving car.
Bottom line: If you are looking to bypass traffic, don't buy until more bugs are worked out and better info is provided(unless you have no other way to rout around traffic and are a long haul trucker).
Perfect Trip Companion March 8, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this device for a last minute trip from Wisconsin to California. I made the trip in 3 days and this Garmin Street Pilot was a God send. Not only did it guide to any address easily, it also helped me find some vendors I needed in certain areas. But beyond that, I was able to play a lot of MP3 files I converted from CD's, I downloaded and listened to Audible books, and I used the blue tooth connection to my cell phone to deal with calls hands free. It even has an option to connect to satellte radio even though I didn't use that feature.
I liked how when listening to a book or music, when navigation instructions came on, the music or book was paused. I liked that I could hook up to head phones which greatly increased the fidelity of the sound. I liked the accuracy of the GPS information related to latitude, longitude, and elevation (usually within 3 feet of posted values in the mountain passes). And I liked the interface with my cell phone including ease of accessing my phonebook, answering, hanging up, and dialing via voice commands.
About the only function I would have liked that this system didn't offer was the ability to psuh the sound through the car stereo system via FM or whatever. Otherwise, it did everything and more than I hoped for when I bought it.
