5 out of 5 stars Does everyting that I want it to do   November 4, 2007

I have another car with the manufacturers GPS which was a $2000.00 option, and was very much against purchasing an add on unit because I thought that they did not have the same features as the units that were installed by the automobile manufacturers. A friend of mine bought a Nivi 660, and it convinced me to consider purchasing one. I have had the Nuvi 660 for two months and am very happy with the purchase as it does just about everything that the one that came with my other car does. I like being able to connect my phone to the device via bluetooth for hands free phone use. The unit is packed with features, and since I travel a lot for business, I can bring it along for my business trips.

I'm not going to reiterate how fantastic this product is. Pretty much no matter how hard you try to get lost, you can't with Garmin's Nuvi 660. It may sound corny, but to someone like me who has a horrible sense of direction, the 660 can change your life.

The only thing I want to mention, is that if you happen to get it stolen, Garmin won't be able to help you. Even though you can use it to find many places, it is not equipped with its own tracker so locating it is next to impossible. Moral of the Story: NEVER LEAVE YOUR GARMIN IN YOUR CAR (EVEN IF IT'S NOT IN PLAIN SIGHT!!)

If your car has a tendency to get broken into, you may want to look into getting a GPS-enabled smartphone with Garmin Mobile software on it. That way you can take your phone / GPS with you everywhere without cluttering your pockets.

1 out of 5 stars NOT FOR TRUCKERS!!   November 4, 2007

If you want to get routed into subdivisions, areas with low bridges, or want to run thru the "ghettos" of every major city we as over the road truckers have to run, then this is the GPS unit for you!! This Garmin660 is lucky to still be riding in my truck and not laying out on the side of the highway somewhere!! The FM transmitter is a joke also. You spend more time changing channels trying to find a station that does not bleed thru than u do listening to the mp3 music. Heaven forbid u get a phone call on the bluetooth option. The complaints from the people on the other end of the call are unanimous!! "Call me back when u turn that pc o sh@$ off!"

3 out of 5 stars Garmin MUST do better than this. Average at best.   November 1, 2007

I owned a Toyota Prius for two years with an on board navigation system that was simply fabulous. I can count on one hand the number of times that system gave me an erroneous instruction or had out-dated information. I've only the Garmin Nuvi660 for 2 months and I have already run out of fingers and toes to count the number of times this thing has let me down. A typical problem is left versus right. It gets it right maybe 50% of the time - not enough for me to trust it. I am always craning my neck to look for an address on both sides of the road because it is wrong so often. The accuracy of the transponder is terrible. My old system always knew if I was on an on/off ramp. It was always able to guide me within a couple seconds in the event of a wrong or a missed turn. No such luck with the Garmin. It's sloooooow to respond to course deviations... slow enough that one often goes even further in a wrong direction before it can come up with a solution. I was out of gas the other day and I used the "Where to - Fuel" selection... the first THREE in the list didn't exist. I can't tell you how vexing it is to be almost out of gas and on a wild goose chase to phantom gas stations -- yet another feature I do not trust. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and the maps and guidance here are marginal to just plain bad. I was lost in Emeryville.. a densley populated area just outside of San Francisco, and I input my destination address in the city. It told me to please proceed to the highlighted route... which was about 5 roads and 10 turns away from where I was... USELESS... not a single instruction as to how to get to the freeway from where I was. Occasionally, it will be in mid navigation and it just suddenly decides that I'm going the wrong way. It will start to "recalculate" for no good reason and start giving directions to who knows where. I know my way around pretty good, but I always input a destination into my Nav system in the event I take a detour or something. In simple vernacular, this thing just freaks out occasionally and starts issuing erroneous directions. One time it had me do a U-Turn on the road it told me to go on ... go back, circle around and then get back on the same road!!! Wacky. It's better than nothing for the most part, but I would absolutely hate to be really lost somewhere and have to depend on this thing to get me out. The other features are OK. The Bluetooth works well, but the speaker sucks and I'm sick of my car being a sea of wires for this thing. The portability has advantages, but I will never ever buy another car without a built-in Nav system again... and for that matter it will have to be a Toyota, because I've seen other systems and they don't work as well as Toyota's either. This thing isn't cheap, and I think Garmin should stop racing to get new models out with new features and just make their core service -- NAVIGATION --- much better than it is. I know it can be done because at least one other company is doing it. I've heard that Toyota's system is made by Alpine. If you are shopping for a system, look at theirs before you consider this one.

UPDATE^^DEC 1 2007^^ I made sure I had the latest software updates and I thought maybe that improved its performance until I had to drive a friend to the SFO airport in the early am. I had to stop at a place in downtown San Fran so I used the Garmin to get me back to 101S which is CLEARLY the shortest and fastest way to the airport. It took me on some crazy route back to 101S, but I was willing to believe it knew what it was doing until it had me exit and take every backroad it could find ... past several 101S onramps to finally after about 50 traffic lights it got me to the airport entrance only to insist that I take a u-turn and backtrack because it was certain I was lost. THE ENTRANCE WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I was 20 minutes later dropping my friend off because I was tired and chose to listen to this piece of crap instead of trust my own knowledge. Sure it will get you there if you don't mind wasting time and taking the worst possible route there is. I checked the settings. Avoidances were disabled. There is no excuse for this thing. The navigation algorithms just plan stink. I AM SO SORRY I BOUGHT THIS GPS. You will be too if you live in the San Francisco Bay area. I am so committed to hating it for wasting my time and money that I am going to start posting video reviews clearly illustrating the bum directions this thing gives, if it gives you directions at all (see the emeryville incident above). It only gives decent directions about 30% of the time... which is UNACCEPTABLE especially since I have a built-in unit in my Prius that makes this thing look like it came from a bubble gum machine.

4 out of 5 stars Overall a great GPS   October 30, 2007

There are many people who have pointed to the good things about the Garmin Nuvi 660. So, I wont rave about how great it is. I've been using it for over 3 months now. Here are a few points:

-> The dashboard disk mount peeled off within the first 20 days of usage itself. So, make sure you order spare supplies when you order this instrument

-> I had set this up on my dashboard (on the Acura TSX) and the suction mount used to come loose almost every day (I dont know if it is due to the heat and cold weather during the day and night). I finally decided to not use the suction mount and set it up near the gear box.

(These were the reasons why I took one point off in my rating)

-> The Garmin Nuvi 660 gets terribly confused if you are about .2 miles away from the destination and you try to map the location (I know this is minor, but it made me spin around in circles once and hence I brought this up)

-> I usually leave the music running when I shut off the engine and would want it to turn back on when I restart my engine. Sometimes, the music was "paused" and I had to press play again. Here are some tips to resume the music: Do not explicitly "turn off" the instrument when you are prompted with the 30 second timer after cutting off power to the device. When the instrument starts back up when you restart the engine, make sure you dont touch the "Agree" button or any prompt when it starts up to make sure the music resumes from where it left off.

-> I get excellent quality on my FM (I live in the bay area in CA and use 89.5 as the frequency). I am tempted to say it is better than radio quality but ofcourse not CD quality. Got myself a 2GB SD card and I listen to music on this device more than using maps on a daily basis

-> Crystal clear voice clarity while I use the bluetooth connection on my phone. People have said that it is unclear when I use my phone directly and I've often switched to the bluetooth for clarity :)
