TomTom One works well but occasionally gets confused January 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought a TomTom One GPS in preparation for a cross-country trip to Washington, DC. The device was a lifesaver in a large, strange city when we arrived at night in the rain in flawlessly guiding us to an apartment in downtown DC.
But you have to keep your common sense about you. For example, occasionally the device just seemed to lose track of where we were and would give obviously incorrect directions. These were rare occasions, however, and the error was obvious at the time.
Another thing to know about these devices is that when you ask for an alternate route it doesn't mean that the entire route will be different. On our trip to DC we wanted to take a route less congested but longer than the shortest/fastest route that TomTom automatically calculates. What I discovered, however, is that TomTom programmed our alternate route for just part of the way and then brought us back to the original routing. So we had the worst of both worlds: longer yet still most of the congestion. Pick a destination along your preferred routing to make sure you don't get sent back prematurely to TomTom's first choice of roads.
All in all, though, I love the device and find it very reliable, helpful and reassuring for first-time trips either locally or long distance. The way it keeps constant track of miles and time to your destination, both interim (when applicable) and final, is really helpful.
TomTom One vs Garmin Nuvii January 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvii 350, used it for a couple of months, hated it, sold it, and bought a TomTom One. For me, the TomTom unit is much better. It's going to be a long time before any of these units will route the user as well as a person familiar with the area, but all in all, I've very happy with the TomTom One. The TomTom activates in 10 seconds, the Garmin takes three times as long and insists every time that you agree to their disclaimer. The TomTom unit has a better designed screen, making the vital information (what direction is the next turn and how far) easily readable even with glare on the screen. It is much easier to understand because the text to voice function is clearer and because its volume varies with road speed. You'd think that the Garmin would be better because it tells you the street name for the next turn, but half the time you can't understand it, and because the screen is so poor you can't read it either. The TomTom allows use of a QUERTY layout for entering information which is much more natural for anyone using a keyboard every day. It has a big suction cup that sticks to the window fairly well. It allows for itinerary planning. The Garmin has none of these features. Both units allow for navigating to a specific latitude/longitude location. Both allow traveling via an alternate route or location. Both units are pretty good, but not great at route planning. The Garmin has an MP3 player. That would be a great thing, but in a suddenly stressful driving situation, it cannot be turned off easily. For me this makes it useless.
Love it! January 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Love this TomTom! Easy to use. No more stopping to ask for directions! No more worrying about getting lost! My neice, sister and mother now all have this TomTom.
Very good January 18, 2008 This is my first GPS and it works great. Bought it six months ago. Easy to set up and navagate. Does not have the turn by turn street voice by name but, no need. If I had to do over I might have got a more upscale one to get the traffic alerts. The screen is on the small size but good enough. Overall I really like it a lot. Got a good price at Amazon too.
TomTom ONE Review January 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I did not expect this product to be as good as it is. I had been pricing the top end models and became frustrated because both the top Garmin and the top Tom Tom models were pre-order only and not yet available. I was going to do quite a bit of driving over the holidays, so decided to buy a cheaper version to see if it was a toy or the real deal. It is the real deal. At first I was upset that it did not recognize my zip code or the names of even the largest cities in my state, but I got on my computer and used my Streets and Trips and determined the longitude and latitude of all my locations and low and behold! The directions were perfect. I expected more errors on maps that the unit couldn't find initially, but I only found one and it was a very confusing intersection to start with, but since the hospital I was going to was insight, it was easy to see which way was correct. I am exceptionally pleased with my purchase. Linda L. Neal
