pretty maps but no very reliable May 25, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
pros: personally, the navigons have some of the prettiest maps I've seen. it looks a lot like what you would find from google maps (navteq maps perhaps?). I think they're easier to read then the maps from garmin/tomtom, and the interface (GUI) is pretty slick too. the reality view is a nice feature and the large 4.3" screen is a must have. time to recalculate routes are quick too.
cons: some suggested routes were not the most efficient. in one case this unit suggested me to take a VERY convoluted route home when I knew better. the unit seems slow when entering information, and navigating through the menus could be faster - in fact the menu lag was the very first thing I noticed about the unit.
all in all not a bad unit but I'm giving this unit 2 stars, and no I would NOT buy this unit again. I'm actually returning it to costco. the unit broke after about 3 weeks of light use. so what went wrong? the batteries ran out and the unit shutdown automatically. when it was rebooted w/ the AC charger plugged in, there was an error (this unit runs on some sort of stripped down Windows platform) and then nothing worked after that. the unit wouldn't accept any input no matter what you typed and it would default to Hawaii as the current state/location. the antenna also stopped working so it couldn't even pull up a standard map. I tried resetting the unit but that didn't help either. I would pass on this unit. I'm going to try a tomtom next.
overall good/battery life not so good/customer srv not good May 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
product is worth it except for battery life. As I was told on the phone and via email replacement parts are not available as I am in need of the info disc and wall charger. The car charger fits loosely in different vehs the correction Navigon offered is to buy an adapter??? not good enough
Disappointing to say the least May 22, 2008 I was excited to get this GPS, as I attended the CES Show (Consumer Electronic Show) which it was awared "Most Innovative in GPS category. Well, I got one for myself and the one star is for the User Interface, pretty cool, and it looks pretty sleek. Here's what doesn't work: 1. Monut, forget it. It's useless and will break with the first 10 uses. 2. Volume, ok if you plan on never putting music on or windows open 3. Stability, if you drive an SUV like I do, it doesn't handle a little bit ok shaking too well and resets 4. Resetting, when it does reset it takes a good 7 minutes to figure out where you are on the GPS 5. Maps, I live in San Francisco...it doesn't seem to recognize the following: Franklin, Market and 3rd street (so far...which is not a good start). Took it to Vegas, same thing, terrile recognition of roads, tried it in Irvine - don't bother 6. Traffic - well pretty useless because if figures out traffic is slow somewhere but only know to re-route you to the next route (without verifying if traffic is really slow there too). So, again, a little pointless.
Great GPS for Price and Features! May 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have not had any of the problems that others have complained about. The accuracy of this unit is spot on. I can be parked to the side of the road and it shows that I am not on the actual road. All of the features work great before the 1.2 update and after. I have used other GPS units and this is one of the best, especially for the price. I also recommend to register at Navigon while waiting for the unit to show up so you can download the 1.2 update before the unit arrives. It is a huge download (1.8GB). I highly recommend this GPS!!
Very Content with Navigon 7100 May 19, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
It is my opinion that Navigon offers a more superior product and feature set than any other unit within this price range. I read complaints from others about touch screen sensitivity and I did experience a little bit of this myself until I found an option to do a touch screen calibration. It helps but doesn't totally fix the issue. I believe Navigon is a company that is sincere in its wishes to keep their units as up to date as possible and will fix any bugs we make them aware of.
I was traveling on Interstate 95 this morning and observed Reality View for the first time. All I can say is "impressive". The view was almost exactly as the highway signage was in real live. I hope Navigon continues to expand the number of highway exits that have this feature. Satellite acquisition for me is very fast...like within 10 seconds of power up I have a working map. I am extremely happy with my 7100 and can look past any of the tiny things that are considered annoyances. No unit is perfect for every person.
