3 out of 5 stars After sales service   November 9, 2006

Although I am happy with the product, I have send several emails to Magellan seeking assistance, but none have been replied too. This may be because I am from Australia, which if that is a problem I should not deal with overseas companies like Amazon.

Regards Neville Prosser

1 out of 5 stars No support!   November 2, 2006

I paid 300+ dollars for a NEW Magellan GPS less than a yearand a half ago from boat Us and they have already declared it obsolete. If you expect any support DO NOT BUY Magellan.

5 out of 5 stars reduced from 5 to 2 stars but Amazon will not allow me to edit   September 7, 2006

I have had no (emphasis NO) software or hardware problems with my unit. I have owned 4 GPS's over the years. I like the user interface on my Garmin eTrex Vista better. But this unit gets faster fixes and works better under trees. It's a 14 channel rather than 12 channel receiver.
But I bought this unit because it is the ONLY GPS on the market that gives all the roads in Australia and an Australia-wide topo map! All on a 500MB SD card.
The weather centre is extremely poor. Save the money and buy the Explorist 500. Otherwise basically excellent.

2 months later: Probs:
1 Unbelievably the time given by this unit is about 3 minutes slow. I say unbelievably because time is how GPS's all work. The lat and long are correct but the time is just wrong.
2 the Australian street map is very accurate.
3 The contour map is badly calibrated by about 70m in my part of Australia. So if you stand on top of a hill the unit says the top is still 70m away. This error is 15 times the uncertainty of the measurements.

This not good for Magellan or for the supplier of the Australian topo map!

I am pretty disappointed.

A year later:
I trashed my Magellan and bought a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx Color High-Sensitivity Mapping Handheld GPS. This is soooo much better!

Note Amazon allows you to edit your reviews but you cannot edit the star rating! Once set initially, it is fixed forever! Amazon should change this.

5 out of 5 stars Great GPS   August 19, 2006

I was concerned about the negative reviews but bought the eXplorist 600 anyway. Great product, glad I didn't pay attention to the reviews. Works exactly as advertised. Onyl issue I had was downloading Mapsend Topo to the SD card. You have to read the instructions. You can not use the serial number on the box or on the sticker on the GPS...YOU MUST USE THE SERIAL NUMBER SHOWN ON THE GPS UNIT SCREEN FOR THE SOFTWARE TO WORK. A quick call to Magellan customer support (on hold for less than 5 minutes) solved the problem. Glad I bought it.

2 out of 5 stars Why did I change my mind?   April 20, 2006

I was all set to by a Garmin and let myself be talked into buying this. Short and sweet XP Pro doesn't recognize the driver even if you say it's ok. Installs it but, won't use it. That means the GPS will not communicate with the computer. MapSend Direct is also imcompatable with XP Pro so it doesn't matter if it talks to the computer or not. I've sent off my e-mails to Magellan but, I hear their support is sad. I hope my credit card company can help me recover some of my money. The GPS seems to be quite fast, accurate and sensitive...compared to my 8 year old ColorTrak which has no problem with XP Pro.
