3 out of 5 stars It's Great - When It Works!!!   October 3, 2007
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

The Magellan 6000T is incredibly easy to learn and easy to use. It gives me confidence to go places that I otherwise would be uncomfortable trying to navigate, since I'm not great with a map.

The downside: it locks up constantly, and sometimes re-setting it just doesn't happen. Therefore, I don't feel confident that I can ALWAYS count on it, and that's a bummer.

When it's good, it's very very good . . . when it's bad, it's horrid!

3 out of 5 stars Magellan is NOT Mac compatible for firmware or map updates...   September 28, 2007

Received my 6000T last Christmas from my wife and daughter. Never had GPS before and love having GPS in the car.

Unfortunately, updating the unit for the newest firmware (mine has an older version out-of-the-box) or receiving the new maps which reportedly came out September 2007, I am stuck. Magellan is not mac compatible. It also is not compatible with all window op systems. Only certain ones.

E-mailed to Magellan - they offered no help nor suggestions. Sigh.

The 6000t has slot for a SD card. If someone at Magellan really cared, they would offer updates on a SD card. Wouldn't need a computer at all. Problem would be solved.

My next GPS will be a Garmin, I think.

Cheers..........

3 out of 5 stars Disgusted   September 28, 2007

It started out great. Everything worked as advertised. I purchased the unit new in November of 2006. About a month ago I noticed the touch screen would not always work. Next, the True view no longer worked when set on manual. Finally the unit does not work on the battery, only when plugged in. But, the battery indicator indicates the battery was fully charged. I started to make calls to their support and it took them days to respond. I kept getting the same woman that was extremely difficult to understand. She had to keep putting me on hold, probably to ask someone what to do or how to respond. We spent about 45 minutes on the phone only to confirm that everything I told her was true. After all this she stated she would have to transfer me to another department. When she did I got a messsage to leave my number and someone would call me back. Well, several days later, while traveling I got a message to call them but they blocked the number and did not leave anumber in the message so I had to wait till the end of my trip to return their call. I, in the meantime, tried using e-mail to communicate. Not much luck there either. it took several days to get a response to each e-mail but some how I ended up with a case ID. After providing all the requested information I waited a couple days only to get an e-mail back that my requested had been elevated and the "concerned" department would get back top me. Two more days and I called Technical Support only to get what sounded like was the same person. I gave her the Case ID Number and she proceeded to ask how she could help me and what was wrong with the unit. I told her I had already listed everything worng and sent it in to them and she should know what was wrong with the unit. I asked how I get an RMA to get the unit repaired since it is still under the warranty. She said I should have the RMA by Tuesday, another 4 days. Who knows, maybe I'll get it repaired by 2009 if at all. Too bad Magellan does not review these.

1 out of 5 stars Buy a Garmin   August 8, 2007

I have been a loyal Garmin user for years until Magellan introduced the 6000T. The feature set was exactly what I was looking for in just the right size package.

Since purchasing in Oct 2006 the following items have occured:

1. The unit never has remembered any address that has been input. Add something to the address book, save it, and five minutes later it has disappeared. Previous destinations...sorry, the 6000T has amnesia. How about my home address?? Sorry again...the unit has reset itself to Denver, CO. Getting the idea?

2. The unit locks up constantly and must be reset.

3. While on the phone with Tech Support the touchpad stopped working.

4. Did I mention Tech (Lack of) Support. First I started with email on the Magellan website. I would state the problem and maybe get a solution to a problem that I didn't have. Usually I would get no answer. I called Tech Support and after finally convincing the fine gentleman from India on the other end of the line that I had a real problem, I was promised a return authorization. Bottom line, no one returned my call and I'm stuck with an inoperative, rechargable brick.

If the unit worked correctly I believe it would be a 5 star product. Even if you are lucky enough to get a trouble free device, beware of Magellan's tech support and customer care. Their shoddy, disrespectful attitude toward their customers should be reason enough to avoid any and all of their US products (it's made by the European company Thales).

Garmin, I'm sorry I strayed.

An update: Garmin email tech support finally responded with a return authorization to their Fort Worth, TX repair facility. I never did receive the promised phone call from their phone support people.

2 out of 5 stars Problem with Magellan RoadMate 6000T   June 8, 2007

We purchased the Magellan RoadMate 6000T for a trip cross country. We arrived with only one misdirection, which Magellan quickly recalculated and sent us in the right direction. We love this unit, but it will NOT backup our information. I tried 3 different SD cards and had Magellan Customer Service walk me through the process several times. Finally on the third call to Customer Support, while they put me on hold I researched this problem on the internet and found it to be a common one. Customer Support could only advise me to send it back to be serviced; they never admitted this can be an issue.

To make the calls to customer service even more challenging, each time I called the person on the other end of the phone, had difficulty understanding me, and I to, had difficulty understanding them.

We currently live in a very high traffic area, and never leave home without it, but we are planning to return it after our new Garmin arrives.
