5 out of 5 stars Best bang for the buck   August 22, 2008
I just purchased the c580 on Amazon for $169.00. Free shipping, and arrived in 3 days. My prior GPS was a Magellion 800.
The c580 is a great buy!
Considerations:
The unit is not a flat unit, however it will sit up much better than a flat unit if you are not attaching to a windshield.
It really does operate right out of the box. "plug and play".
As others have stated, there is a free map upgrade, but beware...it took over three hours on a high speed line. (no..I really mean 3+ hours..)

The Bluetooth connected to my Palm Treo without a hitch. It is really cool to see an incoming call come onto the GPS screen, and be able to answer by touching the screen. You can also make calls from the screen.

The text to speach work great. You can just listen to the verbal instructions instead of looking at the screen.

The speakers work ok. They are at least as good as others I have used.I have not had a volume issue, and there is a choice of voices.

The POI are very good. They do require you to leave the screen, but they also include a phone number link to an establishment, so if you are using the Bluetooth, you just push the call button, and it connects you.

The MSN direct...well it works really well on a major freeway, in a major city. Most of the time it just says "no service available". But in a major city, it really works pretty well for the traffic. The gas prices and movies info. also works well in a major city. If you are travelling on a major interstate, the weather will show many of the cities that you are travelling through.

THe MP3 player...well, why would you want to play anything through the GPS?
This unit has all of the great features than many more expensive models offer, but for $160.00 bucks. GO BUY ONE!

4 out of 5 stars Wow - this made life easier   August 20, 2008

Being a District Manager for Avon Products - I decided go purchase a GPS system for my travels. Living in Kansas, I don't have the problems of big city living - I have problems of which dirt road to turn down to get to my location. I have been extremely thrilled with this product and the ability to show roads that I didn't even know existed. I recently attended conference in Dallas last week and that was the best trial run for me. Remember, the area I am from, there is not traffic - unless you consider getting behind a combine on a two lane road. This item made my commute thru Dallas much less stressful! No wondering about where I had to turn or when - it was all right there for me! I loved the options of finding gas stations and other poi. We used to have the Grandy's restaraunts here in Kansas many many years ago. On our travels home, we managed to find a Grandy's in Ardmore Oklahoma. I was thrilled!
The only issue that I have right now is that the voice sometimes takes a while to update when you have quick turns to make. I won't have this problem on a daily basis, but when traveling to big cities - it was sometimes last minute when I was told to turn if just coming off of another turn. Not a biggie - I absolutely love this product and would highly recommend it to anyone who travels alot.

5 out of 5 stars Great value for the price   August 15, 2008
Got the item within 24 hours of ordering (even though I chose free shipping) from the amazing Amazon.com. With the c580, I, who never remembers the roads/directions, am driving with much more confidence. Though it gets occasionally confused with the jug-handle left turns of NJ, the directions are quite accurate---this feature itself is worth its price. The big advantage of having this (or, any good GPS) is that it will recalculate and send you on your way even if you miss an exit or make a wrong turn. The MSN traffic sometimes works fine. The MSN gas prices feature shows prices for at most 50% gas stations in my area. I downloaded many POIs from the Garmin website---that helped.

5 out of 5 stars Has what I want & need-not full of stuff I'll never use   August 13, 2008

Studied GPS systems for 2 years before buying the Garmin c580 and got a great price (under $200)Even though we never put it on the dash (it set in a "cubbyhole" below the radio) the signal was always strong. It's shape allows it to "stand alone" unlike the thin models that need a stand.

PROS: Ready to go-easy to use. Husband was amazed at how it pinpointed where we where-I love the traffic feature (we avoided a long delay) and the fact I can see how fast he is driving. Text to speech and bluetooth are great. Knowing gas prices is very helpful

CONS: Can't map out a route since there is only one way point-that would be a big plus since we are planing on a cross country road trip-but there is always Google Maps.
