4 out of 5 stars GPS MAESTRO 4050   December 8, 2007
A very nice unit that could use a few improvements one is the voice quality at times sounds scratchy.
Sometimes it does not reconize voice commands and the unit needs to be reset it hangs up this does not happen often and resetting the unit does not cause you to lose your information.

Dissatisfied. I returned my new Maestro 4050. I drove 250 thousand miles with a Roadmate 700 and loved it. After 5000 miles in 7 days with the Maestro, I returned it. The new voice is difficult to understand and poorly engineered. For example, it pronounces "S Florida Tpk" as "sssFlorida T-pak."

The new database in nice ... if you only drive to restaurants. There are 55 categories of restaurants ... but the database does not include all the interstate rest areas. Where are their priorities?! And the navigation algorithyms seem to have flown out the window. "Fastest time" is often reported much slower than "shortest distance," sometimes by hours. And both routing results are often incorrect I found while driving known routes.

The voice response system works in a quiet room with no background noise. But on the road it was completely useless. While driving, I could find no volume, pitch or timbre that would make it respond to my usually ordinary speaking voice. The unit would freeze and require a cold boot regularly until I turned off the voice command feature. The only time the voice command feature functioned on the road was at random times apparently in response to the voice of audiobook readers I was listening to. And never following any audiobook text that resembled the unit's intended trigger word "Magellan."

And the process of returning the unit for a refund was excrutiating! All tech support calls to Magellan go to call centers on other sides of the planet and where discernable speech in English is merely a concept, not a hiring prerequisite.
If you need customer service from Magellan, start with the direct lines to California numbers. Hang up & start over when you wonder what language you are hearing - you're talking to India, or Malaysia or who knows where else. Better yet, buy another brand.

Great Product! Only problem is the Voice Command doesn't always recognize your voice. Traffic also is not that great for rerouting. But the menu is very friendly and screen is nice.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT GPS UNIT   November 30, 2007

Worked great right out of the box. I opted for this GPS unit over other brands due to the voice recognition, but the voice recognition is terribly frustrating. By saying Magellan the voice recognition is supposed to be activated. I have to say Magellan at least 6 or 7 times before it is activated, then the voice controls seem to work fair. Otherwise, the unit is easy to use, easily mounted, and a nice little unit.

Magellan company I wish you bad things!
received magellan gps last christmas
finally figured out there was something wrong with this thing in may
Called the INDIANS was told reconditioned product 3 months
Magellan you suck!
1 year guarantee on new products
The problem I have with their position is
I thought a factory reconditioned produt would be checked out before reselling.
I used this unit about 4 times as this technolgy is new to me a 59er
I just bought a tom tom new for my daughter and suggest to others to stay away from magellan!!!
