5 out of 5 stars I'm Impressed   January 27, 2008
I'll start out by saying I grew up knowing how to use Atlas maps and never really saw the "need" to own a GPS unit because of all the "error" stories.
I recently traveled with a friend out of town and was really impressed with his Maestro 4040 and it's ability to get to restuarants, nitespots, hotels, etc.. and all by talking to it!!!He purchased the voice command option via the internet from Magellan. The part that I loved about it was it was coupled with his AAA membership. I also am a AAA member, for 30+ years, so my "need" requirement turned into, I really "wanted" one.
I shopped and waited and bought the Magellan Maestro4040 at Amazon for well under $300 and free shipping. I was surprised the package arrived in two days!!!Then I was delighted that it was complete with Both chargers and mounting brackets, usb cord, no shortcuts, perfect!! I charged the unit then went online and downloaded the newest firmware and installed it as the directions state, really easy to follow by the way. Then... I purchased the key to unlock the voice command from Magellan and I got a AAA 15% discount!! Great deal, a talking and listening GPS with AAA features for under $380. It couldn't be better could it? This thing actually works, I have used it around home to learn how to use it and once out of town and was super impressed by how quick it found itself and locked on to the satellites. Then getting around was a breeze, Telling me the distance to the turn and the name of the road, how nice is that!! The only feature I would like to see it have is, to be able to build a route on my computer and then download to the GPS. It just would be a little more convenient. I am trully impressed by the overall quality, features and value of this unit and highly recommend it for the money I have paid.

Can't imagine leaving home without it! Had a bit of problems locating specific stores/restaurants in the San Diego area, strangely no problems in Los Angeles. Very user friendly!

5 out of 5 stars Magellan 4040   January 21, 2008
I purchased this GPS unit as a Christmas gift for my husband. I knew very little about these little devices, but did some research and had my son do some research. My son found the Magellan 4040 at Amazon and told me it was a great deal for the money. Well, I decided to buy what I thought was a good deal from one of the home shopping networks. I purchased a Garmin with a 3 1/2 inch screen (same price as the Magellan). When I received it, it seemed so small. So, I ordered the unit my son suggested. I gave them both to my husband and he used them together on a trip. It became very clear that the Magellan was the best unit. The screen is larger, the unit is very easy to operate and it has more features. We have used the unit several times and it has always taken right to our destination. It was especially helpful when we recently traveled to a doctor appointment in Baltimore. We were ready to get on the beltway and saw a very long back-up caused by an automobile accident. We knew we would be late so the unit reprogrammed itself and took us to our location via a route we would have never known to take. Anyway, we LOVE the unit and you can't find it any cheaper. I recently saw the Magellan 4040 at a Staples store for a "special" price of $449.00!!! I highly recommend this unit. We are quite pleased. And Amazon is great to deal with. By the way the OTHER unit has been returned.

5 out of 5 stars The Best   January 21, 2008
The Magellan Maestro 4040 is my first GPS. Not being too computer literate, I found the unit to be very, very, easy to use with little studying of the directions.

It's great when you're typing in a street name and after you type the first few letters, the unit will give you street name options spelled simular to what your typing. You don't need to type the whole street name, only click on the choice that the magellan has found for you. Helps to keep your hands on the steering wheel, and eyes on the road.

The Voice Quality is supreme and plenty loud enough to hear even over the radio.

The unit also comes with a carry case so you can take it with you when you're not in the car. Police are reporting a rash of breaking of windows by theives to steal the new portable GPS units. Don't leave it visible in your car!
