3 out of 5 stars Good but not Great   July 23, 2007

I bought the 4040 to use on extended trips as well as around town in unfamiliar areas. Unfortunately, I found some misleading details in the product descriptions, both here and on the Magellan site. They make mention of the 'trip planner'. From the description, I thought I could plan a trip with one or more intermediate stops, and have the 4040 give me an estimate of the travel time, distance, etc. Unfortunately, it will only give this information from your current location to each of the stops you put in the planner. Not at all useful when trying to figure out when you need to leave to get someplace at a certain time, and make stops in between. I have since found the Garmin Nuvi series allow 1 intermediate stop.

When routing a trip, the unit allows a choice of 'shortest distance', 'fastest time', or most or least use of freeways. In several trips, I found it selects some very unusual routes. In one case, it called for nearly 20 turns in a trip of only 10 miles. I knew the area, and could make the same trip with only 5 turns. I suspect the route the unit selected was marginally faster or shorter, but the difference was not significant. I have had several similar instances with other routes.

Interestingly, I checked the routes on both Mapquest and Google, and found they both also produced the same routes. Perhaps they all use the same mapping service/algorithms. It would be nice to have a routing option of 'least turns'. As far as I know, this is not an option on any gps.

The unit has a good, bright screen. Menuing is a little confusing at first. The bluetooth connected to my phone without problem, but does not allow access to the phone address book. It also does not allow access to the addresses in the gps if you are currently on an active route. It makes it hard to make calls while using the gps.

I bought the 4040 at Costco. I have since ordered a Nuvi 360 from Amazon, and will be returning the 4040.

2 out of 5 stars Good - at first.   July 21, 2007

This was the first GPS unit I purchased. I thought with all of the online reviews I had read that had good comments (even though there were some with unfavorable remarks about Magellan customer service) & the AAA features this unit had this was the unit for me.

For the first week this 4040 worked great. I agree about the darker night mode and other menus not in night mode being a real issue - this unit worked very well for me in the upper midwest getting me to my destinations and all. Then within a week this GPS couldn't find/locate where I was at. Calling customer service was terrible. Using the typical phone menu of Push 1 for: Push 2 for: etc. the selection for the 4040 NEVER was available - I tried for several hours at different intervals. Finally I tried a different selection for a different product model - and got through on that one with no problem. However when the tech got into my problem and realilzed this was a different model, he transfered me to the 4040 tech line.

1). The 4040 tech was very hard to understand through her English. 2). I went through each of her directions of trying to get the unit to function - usually asking the direction several times to understand her. 3). She kept telling me that that will fix it - I kept telling her it doesn't and the unit doesn't know where it is at. And so she had me go through it once again. Finally I just agreed with her - and disconnected the call. I went back to the Best Buy where I purchased it and they exchanged it for a new one - determining this one was bad.

My 2nd 4040 worked great for another 2 1/2 weeks when now the right side of the touch screen wouldn't respond to touch. I tried reaching tech support over a two day period and could not get through.

I went back to Best Buy and they let me exchange this unit for a Garmin.

I think that the Magellan Maestro 4040 "could" have a lot going for it if it would work - and IF Magellan would get their Tech Support up to speed. I understand a lot of companies have moved their tech support to other countries - but that ISN'T ANY excuse for not being able to reach them and/or not having technicians that whoever is calling can understand and fix or take care of the problems.

My last comment is that I liked the way the Magellan Maestro 4040 worked & functioned. But I need a unit that is going to work & continue to work - and so I continue to carry on with my Garmin.

2 out of 5 stars Get Lost with the Maestro 4040   July 11, 2007

The Maestro 4040 has poor mapping on the east coast. I'm not sure about other parts of the country. It gets me to the correct city, but I have to figure out how to find the correct street address on my own. It tells me to turn where there are no roads and has even told me to turn when I was driving over a bridge. I wasn't in a newly developed area either. The Nuvi 350 is just as bad. I have used a Magellan GPS on the west coast and it worked great. Something with a cost of over $400 should work reliably and accurately. Also, products that are sold for use in the USA should have a customer service line that is sufficiently covered by employees that speak English as a first language. If you are considering between the Nuvi and the Magellan, buy the Nuvi. It is a little easier to use and has customer service in the USA, but don't expect it to work any better. Until the maps are brought up to date these are junk.

I bought this unit to replace an old Roadmate 360(which with the exception of outdated maps, was doing just fine) and was initially drawn by its screen size. This later proved to be the bain of its existance(to me anyway)

The unit runs on Magellan's latest OS(on top of Windows ce) and includes the newest map graphics "update" which, according to Magellan, they spent a million dollars revamping. I wont argue that the map display is not easier to read then the last, because it actually is, what I find lacking is the amount of data provided, as well as user adjustability. The display is just plain BORING. For example, there is no ETA. Anywhere. For a GPS, this is asinine. I know many of you will say "does it really matter"? Well honestly, yes it does. Try using a GPS equipped with this (most of them have it except for magellan in-car units) and then use one without this feature. You WILL miss it.

Another complaint is its total lack of adjustability. The display may be easier to read(for some), but the color scheme is NOT changeable and gets old really quick. Also the so called "night mode" is totally useless. It will auto-switch to night mode, however none of the menus are converted to night mode and just about blind you, as well as when the unit enters night mode, the brightness has to be MANUALLY turned down. Totally unacceptable for a unit costing upwards of $500.

Lastly, while the unit does contain NavTeq map data, its routing alog's are very questionable at times. I just bought a unit for $179 (Mio 220C) that has, by most peoples opinion, a lesser map product, however this unit consistently creates better routes than the Magellan costing over twice as much.

Im not bashing this unit, per se, I just think Magellan has a lot of ground to make up before the Maestro is taken seriously.

Magellan Maestro 4040 just OK

We recently purchased this unit for a trip across the country for a family reunion. I have a built in GPS in my 2002 Acura CL so I had some experience with navigation units. This unit did a good job at times but some of the things I've gotten use to with the one in my Acura were not in this unit. One big thing was the ability to zoom in and out. The portability was nice, but it was hard to see in the car sometimes also you cant zoom out just enough to see what city are coming up that is a big plus in my built in unit. When you zoomed out that far on this unit the city names would all disappear it was really a drag.
On this unit you had to hit the + or - each time to zoom in or out and wait fpr for a "refrest" where on the older unit in my Acura there is a graduated ability so if you want to zoom out 3 times you hit the graduated line at 3 and presto 3times zoom. Also the Magellan says it allows for multiple destinations (trip planning) which it does kind of but you can't choose a starting point other than your current location to see how far ect from one place to another will be on your trip. The last thing that I was disappointed in was "exit POI" function. The sales person told me it would show you where the next "roadside rest" was on the interstate, but it will not do that another bummer. So I returned the unit and will try again in a year or so to see if I can find one with these little features that I would like.
