A Good Product October 29, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this navigator for my son, whose first job involves a good bit of travel. It's a big help to him, and he especially likes to use it to find restaurants and shopping when he's staying away from home. This is an excellent product at a price we could afford.
Almost perfect October 28, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For the low price, this is an extremely great bargain. The device is easy to use and will always get you there. Initial setup was not difficult and user friendly. I especially like the "Favorites" feature which makes it simple to program the device at home for various destinations, so you don't have to type in addresses while you're under way. Like others, I would have preferred the keyboard to be in QWERTY format, but otherwise it is easy to use with your fingers, and the stylus is never needed. There are some minor quibbles with the mounting bracket--it's tricky snapping the GPS unit into place, and on rough roads the flexible mount vibrates the unit enough to make it hard to read. While the directions will always get you where you're going, they sometimes take you out of the way, and I have had a couple occasions where it seemed confused about left and right. In one case it told me to turn right onto I-5 North, when the signs clearly indicated that I-5 North was to the left. When I followed the spoken directions, it quickly re-routed me to the correct direction, but I had gone a couple miles out of my way. Another time it took me through a college campus filled with speed bumps, when there was a more direct route on main roads available. On the other hand, there have been occasions where I was sure the unit was giving me bad directions, but was glad when I followed them and found they were the best route after all. Access to the Points of Interest feature while en route is limited, and it would be nice if it could be set to only show POIs in the direction of travel, rather than include gas stations and restaurants you have already passed. All in all, I am very satisfied with the Nextar, and it has been extremely helpful when going to locations I am unfamiliar with and then navigating to other locations or home with minimal fuss. I haven't tried the MP3 feature, since the tiny speaker would not provider quality sound anyway, and it's illegal to drive with headphones on, which is the only time I would need that feature. I really like the ETA calculation it gives you, which I have found to be very accurate, as well as the speed reminder that beeps when you exceed a preset speed. While I have found a few nits to pick, my experience with higher priced units tells me they have minor problems, too. The Nextar is a well-made unit that provides all the basic necessities for GPS navigation, and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to save money.
nextar C3 October 27, 2007 i ordered this product (3 of them) and it showed it came with a remote control but when it arrived it did not have one and there was no way to contact the shipper other than that i was pleased
Nextar C3 3.5" Touch screen GPS In-Car Navigation System with US Mapping +MP3 Player October 24, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a basic navigation system that points you in the right direction with a nice sized color screen. It's not the fastest, or the most accurate, but it should serve the basic needs user pretty well. I bought mine for the price, and I think it serves its purpose, although if I had to do it all over again, I think for me I would have went for a Tom Tom or a Garmin instead.
THE FEATURES I LIKE - It has a nice 3.5" color screen with voice directions. It comes with a car power adapter, battery recharger that you plug into the AC wall outlet, and two ways to mount the device (on a window or on your dash) as well as a carrying pouch. I also has a decent point of interest (POI) list in its memory. It was the least expensive color screen GPS device.
AND WHAT I DON'T LIKE - It has a tendency to freeze occationally to force you to reset/reboot the unit again. I don't know if it's because of the battery not being full power or not. That leads me to the fact that the rechargeable battery is not user replaceable and it only lasts maybe a couple of hours on a full charge. The touch screen is easy to use, although it is not always accurate to the touch (even though it has a touch screen calibration feature). And lastly, it's not really that big of a deal, but if you go a different way than the planned route of your GPS it will take a minute for it to recalculate and may even take you in a circle before you're back on track.
BOTTOM LINE - I say, if you just need basic navigating from a GPS that has a color screen (as opposed to the chromatic screen of the lesser designs), the Nextar C3 is not a bad choice. But if you want more than just a map of the US and speed and super accuracy, well... you will need to spend more.
Good, but missing some things October 23, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I liked this, but ultimately returned it. The specifications say it is supposed to come with a remote control -- I talked to Nextar and they say it no longer does come with a remote unless you find a very old inventory item. To me the remote was one of the things that set this apart, as I have a long dash, and allowing a passenger to control the GPS while it remained on the dash would have been a very big selling point and I was very disappointed it was missing.
I found it to be very fast updating and very accurate, after a moderate startup cycle. The maps were quite good, only missing a few newer roads.
A few items I found that I missed, even in comparison to my much older Garmin Etrex Legend (with no routing) was that there was no "track" of where you had been, and for areas where the maps didn't have roads, The C3 just kept telling me "Off Road" and "Return to Nearest Road" -- annoying for those few areas where it was missing roads, and in larger areas, like the corporate campus I work at it which is several miles square. It was totally useless for pedestrian use.
The routing worked OK. Entering in "Avoid" items to make it pick a route you wanted to take was sometimes tedious but workable.
All-in-all, if this unit had supported either track marking or the ability to position waypoints not connected to a road, or had come with the remote I expected, I might have kept it. With missing all these things, I can find other GPS's at around the same price that are usable for pedestrian use as well.
