Great Item at a Great Price October 12, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I first got this device, I was kind of worried because it wouldn't acquire any GPS satellites, even after a complete full charge of the device. But for some reason after a couple of hours it started working perfectly fine. Now, after starting it up after it has been off for a while it takes less then 60 seconds, and that's in the house. I would definitely recommend this device to someone who is looking for a good device at a good price.
PROS*
Great Sized, Clear Touch Screen, Stylus Very intuitive and easy to use Maps are pretty accurate and has plenty of POIs Small and Portbale Voice Prompted Rechargebale Battery Price$$$ So many different settings you'll go crazy
CONS*
After initial charge and first use, finding a GPS signal may take a very long time, but it will eventually. Doesn't say street names, which isn't really that big of a deal Doesn't have the absolute best GPS chipset as I have read

A GPS portable unit with the basic features and more (like;touch screen, auto dim,speech,MP3 player) that makes it worth the purchase, and the price was excelent,I am happy with it and recommend it to light travelers.
Nextar 3.5" GPS October 4, 2007 First attempt use after charging battery, the unit did not pick up a GPS signal. I almost did an RMA but try it again the following day and it worked fine. I have occasionally been using it for the past few weeks just to get use to the commands that it issues etc. It is fairly accurate and although on a few occasions I would have selected a different route then the unit, it always got me to the destination. I believe that it is a good buy for the price and it has met expectations for occasional use once or twice a month for trips that are not part of my normal routine. I have used the product in Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. What I like most about the Nextar GPS is that if you miss a turn it reroutes quickly. As with any GPS, you have to use your brain to determine if what the GPS is telling you to do is legal and safe such as it may not be smart to attempt a U-turn. I considered acquiring GPS navigation via cell phone but quickly decided to buy a personal GPS (one time fee) instead of another mortgage payment (monthly cell phone data plan & GPS subscription).
Awesome and easy to use! September 22, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Now that GPS In-car navigation systems are finally affordable, I decided it was time for me to buy one of these. My brother had bought the Mio C220 Portable Car Navigation System and we used it on a road trip together. It worked quite well but sometimes it had a few minor glitches... like thinking we were on a particular road while we were in fact in a parking lot. And sometimes it thought we were off the map when we were on a small highway. So those few annoyances made me want to find a comparable or superior product that was within the same price range. (The Mio C220 is one of the least expensive, full featured, and best rated in it's price range).
My research led me to the Nextar C3. It had rave reviews and seemed to have everything I needed: 1.6 million POI, 1GB built in map memory, SD expandable slot with mp3 capabilities, voice prompt...etc. So when I finally got to play around with it, I found that it was even better than what I had expected... and even a bit cheaper than the MIO C220. Here is the list of my pros and cons.
Pros:
- Easy to use interface ( I didn't need to open manual to figure it out)
- Sturdy Build ( I dropped it a few times already with no damage at all)
- Voice prompt is clear and easy to understand, volume is loud enough and adjustable.
- Mp3 player is a nice added feature
- Very accurate indication of speed and location. (more accurate than MIO C220)
- Adjustable fold down antenna designed well and still works when folded down.
- Very portable (about the size of a small point & shoot camera) and included zippered case helps protect it.
- Lots of nice included accessories like remote, car charger, car cradle.
- Recalculates route very quickly when you make a wrong turn.
- Map has 2D and 3D modes.
- Touch screen works very well and stylus hides stows nicely in the back of unit. You can use the tip of your finger-nail too.
Cons: - A bit slow at acquiring satellite signals at initial startup... about 5 minutes.
- Does not seem to verbally tell you that you've arrived at the destination, but it's indicated on the map by a big X.
- Screen is a bit small, but still readable.
Conclusion: For the price, this GPS unit exceeds my expectations. Especially impressive are all the features it includes and it's sturdy build quality. For this price, I was expecting something a bit more 'flimsy' in design, but this thing feels very solid... yet compact. It's also very easy to use and attractive. I'm very happy with this unit so far and it seems like all the rave reviews about it were right on the money.

Excellent product, better than the Garmin i3 September 21, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For some reason, the review I wrote last week seemed not to get posted. I have been using the Garmin i3 for over a year, but decided it's interface (roller button to input info) too tedious, plus, addresses were not recognized, even though the building had been around for years or decades (the Garmin was bought new in 2006). The Nextar uses a different map vender; Navteq....There may be different abilities depending on where you live (I read a review that the Garmin map system was better than Navteq). I live in the Portland, Oregon area and so far, the Nextar is better easily finding an address in an unincorporated area. It will also prompt for a similar address if it doesn't recognize the one you entered (an example, Powell VS Powell Valley Road).
I love the "Location mode" if you find a new, out of the way favorite restaurant or say, trail head or scenic spot, just enter "location" and you can save and give it a name to your favorite places without having to enter the address or intersection information.
Another reviewer indicated you need an SD card to save your recent destinations or favorite places in the event of the battery draining....This doesn't appear to be true as I called customer support and the rep said the SD slot is only for pictures or music and the the Nextar does not have volitile memory. That seems to make sense as the Garmin retains recent information even with dead batteries....
The manual is a bit sketchy. For best sensitivity, you should extend the antenna (which is a flip up panel on the back)
On the plus side of the Garmin; the voices seem more natural the Nextar voice is very mechanical.
I love the ease of entering addresses with the key pad touch screen. I know that prices are falling on these GPS units and 18 months ago the Garmin i3 was the best for the money, now in 2007 it's the Nextar C3
