5 out of 5 stars Best that I've owned.   September 23, 2008
To make a long story short, but hopefully helpful to someone interested. I have owned or had experience with Tom Tom, Magellan, Sony, and Harmon Kardon. I recently picked up the Garmin nuvi 760 this year. It is by FAR the best GPS system I have owned or ever used!! It has the fastest most detailed routing, and it is by far the most accurate unit I have ever used. It has taken me pretty much to the doorstep of every address I have thrown at it. TRUST me, for the price Amazon has it for, GRAB ONE! I went to a local radioshack, they wanted TRIPLE the price! Same with a local Circuitcity.

Please note that there is NO PERFECT GPS SYSTEM. This unit has been wonderful and has been right 98% of the time. It's never made a big mistake like I experienced with Tom Tom(STAY AWAY). If you are still unsure about what unit to buy, check out http://www.gpsmagazine.com/reviews.php it really helped me decide.

5 out of 5 stars A lifesaver on recent road trip   September 22, 2008
After reading numerous customer responses I am very happy with my decision to purchase the Nuvi 760. A recent vacation and job change has utilized my Nuvi and made travel in new cities a pleasure. I especially like to utilize the features to find fuel, shopping and lodging. I am still undecided about getting the MSN direct appartus, but time will tell. This is an awesome purchase and Amazon provided speedy service and a great value too.

3 out of 5 stars Good unit, but Garmin cheaped out on a few things   September 21, 2008

I bought this 760 to replace a stolen Nuvi 660. Initial impressions after using for a couple weeks:

Positives:
Sleek design, good looking, and no antenna/receiver moving parts.
Good interface, intuitive menus.
Bluetooth phone functions are easy to use.
Volume control easy to adjust (better than the 660 where volume is annoyingly buried in a sub-menu).

Negatives:
No AC wall charger included, only a cigarette adapter. My 660 came with one, and as one of Garmin's higher-end units, this one should too.
No carrying case. Again, my 660 came with one, and it's petty of Garmin not to include even a basic sleeve to protect an expensive piece of equipment, forcing you to spend another $15-20 on a case to keep the unit looking and working like new.
Poor speaker quality. Again, I can only compare to a Nuvi 660, but the sound from the 760 speaker is tinny, thin and warbly. Sound quality of turn-by-turn directions is poor, as is the voice quality while using the Bluetooth speakerphone. I read that the dual-speaker 800-series sounds much better, but you pay a big premium.

All in all, Garmin makes a good GPS and I'm sure this one will serve us for many years. But I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth because I feel the 660 offered better value and better sound quality for less money.

4 out of 5 stars Garmin nuvi 760 GPS Review   September 19, 2008
I had been a Verizon VZ Navigator user for a while on my cellphone, but it doesn't work in Canada. For a recent trip to Vancouver, BC, I decided to upgrade to a GPS receiver that would work in Canada. I settled on the Garmin nuvi 760, which covers the US and Canada by default. If I need to go to other areas like Europe or Asia, I can purchase other maps for those trips. Strangely, it doesn't seem to have a map for Japan, a country I travel to more frequently than Europe or Asia.

I upgraded the software on the GPS using the USB connection to my PC, and Garmin's Web Updater software that runs on the PC. It took a while to figure out how to download the 2009 Map from Garmin. You need the serial number to access the upgrade, and my serial number had a character "A" that looked like an "8", even when viewed with a magnifying glass. The map upgrade is 2GB in size, and will take a while, even with high-speed Internet broadband.

Overall, the GPS works pretty well both in the US and Canada. Sometimes it selects some bizarre routing, trying to send you down a residential street instead of a main arterial, for example. It is sometimes hard to figure out why it is sending you down one route, instead of another possible route that you think is faster. Sometimes it will send you to an alternate route, even though traffic on the main route is not bad enough to justify the reroute. In the morning, it will insist on sending you through bad traffic on the interstate, instead of using the alternate route that is consistently better than the freeway.

All of this leads to hearing that surly "Recalculating" that sounds like the GPS is being inconvenienced, when frequently, the recalculating isn't even your fault. They should have a setting, or an alternate voice that is more cheery.

Obviously, this is a serious upgrade from a cellphone GPS. I now use the Garmin for every trip. Even if it is not guiding you anywhere, the map mode gives a nice preview of what is coming up on your road. For curvy sports car roads, this thing is a godsend, because you can see the curves coming up well before the road sign warnings.

Great device easy to use right out of the box, I traveled to Pittsburg Pa. recently and it navigated me all through the city and I did not get lost even once and I am not familiar with Pittsburg at all. I highly recommend the Garmin 760 or the 660
