1 out of 5 stars Poor data base   November 6, 2008
When a gps data base tells me the nearest Starbucks is 73 miles away, it's got serious flaws (I live in metro Phoenix). Rest stops are another peeve: they're simply not there. When I'm looking for a rest stop (wife has a 50-mile capacity), it comes up blank, even as we pass one that's been there 20 years. Commercial establishments (restaurants, stores, etc.) also 'way out of date. Very disappointing. I'd buy an update only if my db is about 5 years old, and only for updated streets.

1 out of 5 stars Should come with its own software programmer   November 5, 2008
I wont be applying for the geek squad anytime soon but I sure can handle my computer for the most part but figuring out garmins maps, codes, file updates, moving files, renaming files, serial numbers and what-not has been nothing but an exhausting headache. I have been trying for days to update to north america 2009 and still have yet to finish. I'de like to put my destination in prior to my trip down south but for whatever crazy reason that isn't working either. Last trip to florida I had to sit in my rental car for 45 minutes while the rest of my family swam trying to pick up satelites so that I could enter DISNEYWORLD as a waypoint. VERY annoying. Oh yeah- and that was after 20 minutes in the airport of trying to enter the rental condo as a waypoint. That NEVER worked and luckily I was smart enough to have brought written directions as a back up plan. I would not take another garmin product if they gave it to me...EVER. The only nice thing I can say is that customer service has been very patient and other than their crappy hours I have not had a problem with reaching them. If you buy a garmin product all I have to say is "good luck"

2 out of 5 stars Garmin 2009 Map Update   November 2, 2008

Just be careful! If you have more than one Garmin unit, you CAN NOT SHARE ONE MAP update! Each unit must have it own map update. That means not one but 2 purchases. Is it worth it? Frankley I don't think so.
I purchased a new Garmin for a gift for my daughter. Garmin had just elected to no longer allow free updates for this unit as newer units were already on the shelf. I bought the unit and an updated map set thinking I could update the new unit, and the other 2 my wife and I use. Wrong - no way!
I programed the unit I was giving to my daughter and tried it out. Finally after 3 years, Garmin added our sub -division to the mapping system. I'm sure they have done the same thing with other 3 + year old locations that somehow they missed. As cities across America change their street configurations due to construction of sewers and new highways, will the new map set from the Garmin pick these up? Not likely as they may be only temporary. Thus is it worth spendning anywhere from $55 to $85 for the update - I don't think so. Especially in these "tighter" economic times. I'll save the money 2 more map sets would require and wait a couple of more years to update.
Perhaps Garmin and the other manufactures that follow this money grabbing method of charging for updates will realize that selling updates with the ability to upgrade more than one unit from a map set makes for good customer relations, but I won't hold my breath for that!

4 out of 5 stars no problem   October 27, 2008
Last year I did the 2008 update and it took at least 2 hours; this year is took slightly under two hours, but I was prepared since I remembered to carry my laptop's external power unit. Since I purchased from amazon.com, price was lower than last year's overall cost. I have not noticed any differences yet. Packaging was a Royal pain, a CD Jewel case inside a stiff clear plastic "bubble" pack, wich I could understand if you were buying a local store such as best buy or circuit city but for mail order it was overkill times 10.
