3 out of 5 stars Shark Steam Mop   November 14, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I have hardwood floors and ceramic tile. It seems that no matter what products I have used in the past, I cannot bring that new, shiny and sheak look, like you get when you first buy your floors.

I can only rate this steam mop at a 3. The reason for this is simple. It does clean on the surface dust and dirt. It does generate steam after you pump the handle a few times. The overall effect is this:

Hardwood floors - it will not ruin it. I've been told many times that water is the best way to clean hardwood floors. So, the steam works, but it will not leave a shiny, sleak look. It does generate a small dull shine, but I can do that myself by getting on my hands and knees and scrubbing my heart out.

Ceramic tile - yes, it cleans it...but leaves a dull, bleak finish. I still have to get on my hands and knees and smooth the dullness away to bring a shine. That to me, is not worth the money.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, commercials are misleading   November 14, 2008

We purchased this product for our ceramic floor with the belief it would get the job done. We were pleased with the long cord and how fast it produced steam. However, our love of this product ended there. It cleaned the surface dirt but pushed the rest into the crevices in the floor. It does not clean hard to reach places either.
We have only had The Shark for about 7 months and today while cleaning the kitchen floor the handle broke right in two. I was not using heavy pressure but the long handle is very flimsy plastic and just snapped. There are many other products like this and I would recommend one of those rather than this thing. Not worth the money at all!

1 out of 5 stars Shark Steam Mop will not ruin your floors.   November 13, 2008
If you have a concern that the Shark Steam Mop may ruin your floors, set that fear aside. It will not ruin your floors because it does not generate enough steam to clean them, much less ruin them. I sent mine back and am waiting to see if they really do honor their money back guarentee. I feel that the steam mop is probably a good idea if you can find one that generates sufficient steam. I gave a rating of one star only because the program would not let me rate it at NO STARS which is what it deserves.

1 out of 5 stars Stopped working after 6 weeks   November 13, 2008
I was really happy with this product, until it spontaneously stopped working after only 6 weeks of use. I called the company, who said I would have to ship it back to them for inspection. They also said I'd have to include a check for $9 to cover the cost of shipping it back to me after the inspection. OF course, the cost of shipping (mine and theirs) is about 1/3 the cost of the product itself. In short, I was very disappointed with this item and would not recommend that anyone else purchase it.

4 out of 5 stars Replaces mopping, not vacuuming   November 13, 2008

I have had this product for about 6 months, and I use it at least once or twice a week on a laminate (hardwood style) kitchen floor of about 10' x 16'. I have two cats, a one year old, and a husband of average cleanliness.

PROS:
I have found that it not only replaces my mop, but it actually does a
better job than my previous mop did. The microfiber head has a good sense of friction and traction for scrubbing up bits of dirt and dried mystery spills. The sense of resistance against of the floor makes me feel like it is scrubbing well. And the black dirt that I see on the mophead is plenty of evidence.

The steam comes out with every push forward, and it loosens up grime on the floor. It is user friendly and there are no buttons or switches to worry about. Just plud it in and go.

The microfiber heads are so easy to put on and take off. Just velcro! Also, the microfiber heads are machine washable, which is great.

CONS:
Microfiber heads are expensive. I made the mistake of putting two into the dryer, and the quality of the fibers has gone down. I would follow the instructions carefully for maintenance of those heads. Otherwise, they work great and I love them.

Refilling the reservoir may be necessary. I go over my kitchen twice during one mop session, and sometimes I need to refill the reservoir. If I have been mopping for some time, the head does get soaked with water, and may need to be changed for a dry one. But this is not unexpected as it is described in the manual. I don't mind switching heads or refilling the reservoir.

OTHER THOUGHTS:
People have complained about the "flimsy" stick. I haven't had any problems with it. While it doesn't feel particularly solid, I am not at all concerned that it will break. I think that it is lightweight and comfortable for me to use.

This will not replace vacuuming. If anything, you need to vacuum before using the steam mop. People complain about a line of dirt, and that is simply because this is a mop, and not a vacuum. If you have loose dirt or dust on your floor, it will help to vacuum first. I hate cleaning so much that we have a Roomba that vacuums daily to help get rid of crumbs and cat hairs. This way, when I mop, there are no crumbs to deal with, and I can concentrate on just scrubbing grime. As with traditional mops, I recommend doing a quick vacuum before using the steam mop.

All in all, I love this steam mop. It has been a life saver, especially with a toddler in the house. It is fast and easy to use for a working mom. It is expensive, so I hope that it remains durable. Like I said, I've had it for about siz months, and used it at least weekly.

And, finally, when I am done using the steam mop, I feel that the kitchen floor is really CLEAN. Bottom line.
