Attractive case with decent protection, some flaws January 19, 2008

This is a nice looking case, and offers good protection, at a reasonable price (I paid $21.06 from Amazon in January 2008). The Amazon and Belkin-provided descriptions are accurate, except that the case does not have the stated "D-ring" for lanyard attachment, or anything like it (not important to me). I give this 4-stars, even with all the negatives below, in comparison to other cases available, for the postive reasons stated, on that basis it is very good. It would be 5-stars if they used two pieces of stiffer, more mar-resistant plastic, details below.
The good:
*Nice leather, good soft plush lining, excellent construction.
This case will last longer than the iPod :(
*Plastic shield protects screen and clickwheel very well.
*Fits my 80GB 5.5G Video iPod like it was custom made. Snug fit, and
slides in and out with ease, and without sticking or catching. Other
models may be looser; best to check the thickness specs for yours
(if other than 60/80GB video [which are supposedly the same] at
Apple's website or in your docs.
*Secure closure, good access to dock connector, headphone jack, hold
switch.
*Operation of the iPod, except as noted below, is complete, good
access and response.
*The oversewn lip/edge on the sides and bottom, along with overall
rugged, well padded construction, make all but the most brutal
handling worry-free. I haven't dropped it more than 6 inches, and
then only onto carpet, but I expect this case will prevent all
cosmetic damage, and most functional damage, when dropped onto hard
surfaces from a height of more than three feet (the only thing that
would really protect an iPod from a 6 foot such drop, especially
multiple occurences, would be something with at least an inch of
medium density foam [higher density material transfers shock rather
than absorbing it; think pillow vs. mattress]).
*Comes with a little gimmick that sticks to a dashboard or other
surface and allows the iPod to be secured thus, and removed (the
attachment remains on the surface you stick it to and can't be
transfered to another, at least not more than once).
*The Amazon photo, as of the date of this review, is an accurate
and quite good representation of the actual case you receive.
The not-so-good:
*The closure flap, as noted by another reviewer, does tend to
"thwack" back, hitting the screen, if you do no take care to hold
it while inserting or removing the iPod. It did this a few times
to me before I got savvy, and made an ugly mark once that
fortunately easily came of with a little warm water and a paper
towel (clearly transfer from the strap material, not an actual
mar on the screen). A minor point, but beware.
*The plastic screen and wheel guard is easily scratched and marred.
Mine is developing a bit of a haze from many tiny such marks after
just a month's use. I suppose when it gets annoying, I can use one
of the many products (I use Novus plastic polish) to buff them out.
Alas, from long experience of similar plastics, all such clear
protectors (except Lexan or hi-grade polycarbonate) are subject to
such dulling.
*The plastic screen is less than perfect for viewing videos, though
it is OK. For extended viewing, I will take it out of the case. No
biggie, since I don't use the video/photo function much, but you
should be aware of this. Almost no iPod cases I know of
with this sort of sewn in or glued in clear plastic screen
protection do much better in this regard.
*The plastic protector makes using the click wheel a bit tricky,
at first. It took a few days to re-learn using the click-wheel
through the plastic protector, but it's fine now. There is NO
discernable effect on the buttons. But for some users, this may
remain unacceptable.
This is a good choice as a protector case, with the limitations on video viewing and some change in click-wheel feel, noted above. The main flaw is
the one-piece screen/wheel protector, which tends to warp a bit in the wheel area causing the noted touchy operation of the click-wheel. The design would be improved if two pieces were used, with a rigid piece of leather between the screen protector and the click wheel protector. Also, while the belt clip doubles as an effective earbud cord "manager" (you wind the cord on a secondary clip, so you can clip the whole thing to your belt even with the earbuds wound up), the belt clip itself doesn't fit thick belts (>1.4") securely. I don't generally use belt clips for phones or other electronics anyway. You can PERMANENTLY remove the clip if you wish, and WITHOUT leaving a mark or gap on the case (nor any stud or other hardware), but it CAN'T then be re-attached later. I don't currently have or use a dock or other accesories, but it appears you would have to remove the iPod from this case to securely connect it to a dock, due to the sewn-edge of the leather extending about 1/8"beyond the opening (and over 1/4" beyond the flush-edge of the bottom connector) The charger cord and PC cord connect perfectly while in the case though, so charging and syncing can be done while in the case, no problem.
Overall, I recommend this case as offering very good protection, permitting most normal operation, and as being attractive, very well made and a good value for the price. If I buy another leather case though, I will choose one with a flip-up solid cover over the whole face of the ipod (with or without the stick-on clear screen protector). I think that is a better design because of the operation of the click wheel, even if for a few moments at a time it might not protect the screen and wheel as well as this one does.
Handsome, useful, but not perfect March 13, 2007
Well, as the title says, this is a nice case, but there are a couple problems.
It looks very good, and it keeps the iPod safe, generally. There is a useful cable manager in the back to wind headphones, but the belt clip is pretty useless. My main issue is with the little tab. If you don't physically hold it back when you remove the iPod, it will thwap back and scratch your screen. Mine now has some ugly hairlines running down the screen because of this stupid little design problem.

I have a 30 gig iPod and this leather case fits great! All of the openings are in the right place, the protective stitching surrounding the case offers extra protection against accidents, and the belt clip/ear pod wrap is awesome! I kept getting my ear pod line tangled, but not anymore. By the way, it looks sharp too! Definitly a great value. Highly recommended.

I have had my iPod video (30GB) for about a week now and I decided to buy a case for it since it was already getting scratched, even though I was being really careful with it.
I think that this is a great case, it has a nice clear window that lets you see the click wheel and the scree, it also looks great. A couple more nice things are that it has a nise soft fabric on the inside so it wont scratch you iPod and it fits the ipod nicely.
The only things I don't like about it is that you have to take the case off to out the iPod in a dock. Also it makes you iPod a lot bulkier because it has a clip on the back that you cant take off.
