Great product April 11, 2002 Recently purchased the Compaq internet appliance 1A & it is a great thing to have if you don't have a computer. It is one way of learning how a computer works. It is compact & can take it on the road with you. A great invention. Thanks Compaq.
Nice machine, faulty subscriber service March 19, 2002 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
My 79-year old mother purchased this internet appliance, and was at first delighted with its small size and flat-panel monitor. The trouble began the first day when we signed up for the required Microsoft Network service. We could send email, but could not receive it. We called the tech desk, and they said they could fix the problem. Nothing happened. We called again two days later, then called again. A month has now passed. We have made more than 20 telephone calls to MSN technical support. The first-level support always says the problem is in an MSN router, and they "escalate" the problem to a second-level technician. The second-level has not or will not cure the problem, nor have they contacted us. There are no other numbers we can call, and no one else to contact. We are at a dead end. We are now going to ship the machine back and cancel the service. I have never--not once in my life--experienced such frustrating and poor service.
Great for some, but not a toy for everyone... March 7, 2002 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have had a fair share of troubles with my internet applliance, but I knew what I was getting into when I bought it. I knew I wasn't getting a PC so I didn't expect one. I have had my IPAQ replaced and have spent plenty of time getting to know the MSN tech support folks over the phone, but overall, I am pleased. It is fast and convenient, and the price is a bright and shiney light in a sea of big price tag electronics that are beyond the reach of my budget. So, I highly reccomend it to folks like me, who are satisfied with the internet's content only. There are plenty of games, and communication methods, movies and music to be accessed through the IPAQ. For those who can't live without a PC and all of the software and file saving, downloading, word applications etc. that it provides then I do not reccomend this appliance! If you've got the money, and the know how then I suggest you get a get a full fledged PC! I wish I could afford one, but until I can, I'll gladly stand by my IPAQ. (By the way, I live in a rural area and am forced to use my own ISP, I have had no problem doing so, and have not had to pay MSN a dime.)
BEWARE!!!(...) You don't need this headache!!!! December 12, 2001 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
What a joke this "appliance" is. We purchased one of these for my grandmother as a Christmas gift last year. It worked for about 2 weeks, then quit. She boxed it up and they sent her another, which worked for about a month. To make a long story short, she is now on number 10!!!!! She wants to send it back for good and just get a computer, but, of course, she is locked into another 2 years of MSN service. Knowing the trouble and headaches she's been through, I would NEVER recommend this product to anyone. I wanted to warn you to STAY AWAY!! P.S. If I could have given it 0 stars, I would have.
Best Internet Device Yet October 15, 2001 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I purchased WebTV for my mom (80), it not only confused her - it confused me, with 20 years of PC experience. But, when she sat down with the Compaq Internet Appliance, she took to it right away. It's easy to use and very intuitive. She printed a recipe the first day she used it. I'm not a Microsoft fan, but they've done a great job with the new operating system for this device. The shortcut keys are great and the homepage is clear and easy to navigate. I was surprised how quickly pages loaded and how well video played. However, you might want to add a pair of speakers, as the built in one is very tinny. The only downside is the size of the screen, which might make the text difficult to read. Even changing the font size to largest won't really do it for someone with poor vision. That aside, it's just a great device for someone who wants all the Internet has to offer without the complexities of operating a PC.
