Bargain September 14, 2008 This GPS finds your position fast, and calculates the next turn quickly. I did have some trouble when I tried to download the updates from the web site - If I didn't know anything about computers I would not have been able to fix the problem. Also, the voice does NOT call out the STREET NAME for the next turn. Place the unit where you can read the street names and you should be OK. It doesn't show the destination address on the screen (at least I haven't figured out how to make it do that yet), and I sometimes would like to see that to make sure of where I'm heading. Over all it's a good bargain. For my next one I will probably spend a little more money and get one that calls an audible street name for the turns.
Wouldn't download map from internet. Really disappointing. September 10, 2008 I chose the One over Garmin specifically because they offered a map of Italy for only $60, Garmin's was more expensive. The map is not available on hard media, but only from Tom Tom's website. I spent, without exaggeration, 6 - 8 hours trying to download it, on the phone with tech support and off. I never did get it, and went to Italy without it. I could have really used it there too.
The tech people answer the phone quickly, are friendly and tried to be helpful, but none of them really seemed to know much beyond the basics.* The problem wasn't my computer either - I have a nearly new HP with Vista and use a Comcast cable connection, a very common set-up.
Some of the techs thought the problem might have been because I have a router, but so do millions of other people and a proper product should work with it - or they should tell you up front, on the package and advertising, that the product might not work with a router.
Back in the USA it seems to work fine. It's the only GPS I've owned so I have nothing to compare it to, but it at least does the basics right. I haven't actually used it that much, I really bought it for my trip to Italy, where it was useless.
If you need a basic GPS to use now and then, I suppose it's ok. I just can't be enthusiastic about Tom Tom because I had such an unpleasant experience with them. Next time I'll probably buy a different brand.
*While most of the tech people were very nice, at one point, after hours of messing with the Tom Tom, I was put on hold for 40 minutes so a rude lady could snippily tell me she knew exactly what the problem was and she'd personally hand-load the program over the 'net. After much more messing around it still didn't work. Of course.
TomTom One September 8, 2008 Great product. I liked mine so much that I bought one for each of my daughters. Great price on Amazon.com plus free shipping!
Wife likes it! September 5, 2008 TomTom ONE 3rd Edition 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator I bought this for my wife and she is electronically challenged.........She loves the Tom Tom for its user friendliness. I like it because of the price.
Pretty Good except Text to Speech September 4, 2008 I recently purchased a Tom Tom One at the same time that a friend bought a Navigon with Text to Speech for about $50 more. The text to speech is a huge advantage. We took both on a recent trip and it was amazing how often the Tom Tom "Turn Right" voice command led to confusion over which street to turn on. The Navigon telling us the street to turn on was much easier to follow.
I really wish I had done more research on GPS options.
