Great product May 14, 2008 It is a great GPS device for anyone who loves outdoor activities. I use it for hiking and biking purposes. With the right kind of maps you can use it for navigation in the cities also. It comes with only a base map. Base map is a very low resolution map. When you are buying this device you might want to consider buying a set of maps that suits your needs. Garmin makes several maps. If you are an outdoor-sy person you might want to try out TOPO maps from Garmin. They have a good TOPO maps for all of US. Also, they have higher resolution maps for national parks and some state parks. City Navigation maps that Garmin sells would be ideal for using this device in your car. It is not as good as some of those other Garmin GPS units that are designed for navigation in cities but will do the job. One of the best things about this unit is the speed with which it can catch the satellites and get a fix on your position. On a clear day, it would get a fix in a couple of seconds after you turn the device on. It gets a fix even when I am sitting in my living room! The software that comes with the unit (on the CD) is just a waypoint and map manager (you have to get maps separately). That software, called Mapsource, can be used to manage several maps that you may own - like TOPO USA, TOPO 24K, City Navigation, etc. Mapsource software is useful and intuitive. It does not need a lot of training or help to use. Software on the device is also intuitive. It comes with a manual although I never had to use it. A couple of things missing that would have fetched this product 5 stars from me: *Maps: I think this device should come with maps. If not detailed topographic maps, it should at least come with a better basemap. *Mapsource software: The software that comes with the device is a trip and waypoint manager. Although the software is intuitive it could be better. The software is for PC only. This software is available for Mac computers also (download from their website, still in beta) but managing maps is not an easy solution with Macs. You first have to buy Mapsource maps for PC, put them on PC, download a PC-to-Mac map conversion software, convert the maps into Mac format, burn a DVD and then transfer those maps to Mac. I think that needs to be fixed.
Excellent choice! May 14, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought it thinking it would be very big and heavy GPS, but when I have it my hands for the first time it sorprises me, it's actually compact and incredibly light! It also has many off the chart functions like calculator, paragliding configs, moon charts, cool games, etc.
For me it's a Excellent choice between price and functionality!
Can't beat this GPS for the price May 11, 2008 I bought this GPS 60CSx to use on my motorcycle along with the RAM mount and I have to say that I'm very happy with it. I loaded up a Topo map and a Metro Guide on it since I already had those from a previous GPS (etrex vista) and this GPS works great, way better than my old one. The color screen makes a big difference and it has a slightly bigger screen also. It redraws maps much faster and is easier to use. The electronic compass is much better also as you can now see what derection you are pointing without having to move like I had to with my old one. The learning curve on this was much less than on the etrex vista, very user friendly. For the motorcycle, the RAM mount is better than expected. I can adjust it so the GPS is right in front of me and easy to get at. For the motorcycle (a lot of off-road riding) I give it 5 stars. However, if you are using it mostly on-road, I'm sure there are better GPS's for that intended use. Bottom line, it can't be beat for the price for an off-road GPS.
So far so good. May 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had my unit for only a month and it works extremely well. It picks up 8 to 12 satellites and is accurate to about 11 feet. I have down loaded tracks and waypoints to aerial photos using some free software and they are dead on. I even get excellent results with the GPS sitting in the front seat of the car. I use it professionally to map forestry and other projects. It works great. I have not tried the navigation or other features so I can't comment on them.
The only down side is that I need to use third party software to down load tracks so that I can use them in my GIS programs. (ArcView and Manifold). Garmin should provide this with the package. It would make life easier and probably increase their sales to professionals. If you need the free software, go to the web and seach MSDNR Garmin (Minnisota Department of Natural Resources). Download the program and read the help file. It is not too complicated and works just fine.
excellent product! May 9, 2008 My friends got me into geocaching, and they both had this unit so i figured it was a good place to start. After reading all the reviews, it definitely stood out as one of the best units, and after buying it, it is undoubtedly an excellent product. My ONE complaint with this unit, is the 30 character limit on the notes. In today's day and age where you can buy the micro-SD cards in gigabyte sizes, there really is no excuse for that. Otherwise, i have absolutely no concerns or problems with this unit. It is easy to use, and solidly built. Definitely a recommended unit!
