5 out of 5 stars My Garmin 305   May 14, 2008
I got this in early April and an really satisfied with the overall performance. It is easy to use right away and thats great because I hate to get a new toy and have to take three hours to figure out how to use it.

I have discernably improved my performance over this last month. I lowered my overall heart rate utilizing the heart rate zones while covering the same distance in less time. The GPS seems to be both accurate and precise. I have covered the same routes many times and the Garmin has mostly indicated the mileage the same along the way. Sometimes if really cloudy,it can lengthen your miles out.

Only one complaint so far. The heart rate icon in the upper right is tiny. You can barely read it standing still, no way when you are running.

It also records your history so I can see in one month I have gone 139 miles and burned 22,378 calories in doing so.

I recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin Forerunner 305   May 14, 2008
I was looking for a good heart rate monitor when I found the 305. I read a lot of reviews before deciding to give it a try. It is, afterall a little pricey. I also planned to use it on my bicycle for motivation, tracking, recording and generally telling me what is going on with my rides.

To my surprise, my pleasant surprise, this unit does it all. The GPS finds a signal quickly, the HRM provides a representative HR output and there is even an adapter for cadence and speed. All this in a small package. When I finish my workout I can take the unit to the computer, plug in to the provided software and get a complete "picture" of whetever I want to see: time of ride, average speed, HR by minute and average time in selected HR zone . . . even a picture of my ride on my existing Garmin map . . . every turn, direction, etc.

Is this too much information for you? If it is, then you can just know that the information is there "if" you want it and enjoy the ride.

So far this is a great purchase. I bought this version (running/biking)instead of just the bike version for two reasons: 1- it's smaller and 2- it can be worn on the wrist if and when I want to use it that way.

Great product for the person who wants to know what's going on.

4 out of 5 stars A great training addition   May 14, 2008
OK, lets face it, you can run without this item but it sure does add to it and give your friends and other runners some toy envy. Having the ability to set laps and track time for each (I use miles) gives you a documented history of your performance.

Only con I can give it is it can take a while to sync up to satellites initially especially downtown (Boston), which can frustrate people you are running with more than yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Great motivator and just plain fun to use!   May 13, 2008
i bought the 305 because friends had one and they seemed to enjoy using it. Now mind you they are much more structured and dedicated to their running than i am to mine but it seemed to have some useful features that i though twould be neat to have so i decided to buy one too.

Little did i realize how much i would use it and that my wife would get into using it too. In fact it has become a great motivator for both of us. I especially like being able to know how far I have run (without the car check) and how fast I am going at any point in time and of course my final pace/time/etc. In the end it has made running more fun and for me that is is well worth the price of admission.

one thing I do not use is the heart rate monitor although I can see where it would be useful in tracking improvement in more ways than just straight speed/time. That is if you are going faster but your heart rate remains the same as it was for slower times you must be improving. Anyway I don't use it so the Garmin 205 is probably adequate for me. In fact I convinced another friend of the usefullness of the garmin but also convinced him to just buy the 205.

5 out of 5 stars great motivation   May 12, 2008
I am a family doctor who encourages all my patients to exercise. I am a "light recreational" runner (less than 15 miles a week) but track my distance and times and heart rates. The 305 is a reliable heart rate monitor, and 'training buddy' for me and a number of my patients. I have run new areas and routes and it tracks my position perfectly. (I zoomed in on the PC screen and it had tracked which side of the road I was running on! Pretty impressive).
I recommend the 305 to beginning and more serious athletes in order to time, track and to safely improve their performance.
Con: the little beep is way too quiet to use as auditory alarm.
