4 out of 5 stars excellent hardware, software getting better   April 12, 2008

As many others here said, the reception on this is excellent. I was able to pick up several satellites when I turned it on while on the ground floor of my 2-story house! I would give it 5 stars, except the OS X software is still getting going- there is a working beta version of a waypoint organizer called "Bobcat" that a Garmin person poitned me to, but it's not easily found on their web site. But what I actually use most of the time is the "Garmin Communicator" plug-in, which allows one to download coordinates from the geocaching website directly into the unit with just a press of a button. There is an OS X version of that which works fine, but again, it took me a while to find it. This is my first GPS unit, so I have nothing to compare to, but I wish the menu system was a bit better organized as well, or would remember better where one left off in the "find" and "trip calculator" menus. Overall I like it quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars love this garmin etrex   April 9, 2008

I really enjoy using the Garmin etrex hand held GPS.I recently read up on Geo-Caching on the internet and discovered a wonderful new hobby, but i wasn't sure which GPS would be more suitable for me as i lacked experience in using one.I spoke with a man at a sporting goods store and he gave me the low down on the various features.I ordered the Garmin etrex which has a color screen and find it is easy to read .I chose this GPS because it didn't have too many"bells and whistles" .I wanted something which would be easy to comprehend and wouldn't take up too much of my time getting used to its features.I sure chose well!I studied the booklet and next day went Geo-Caching and found my target and was able to post my find on the website, Geo-Caching.com ,that evening.I would recommend this model to anyone who is a first time user of a GPS unit!In fact, if i ever had to replace my Garmin Etrex, i'd purchase another one from Amazon.com ,just like it.I have really enjoyed my new hobby and thanks to the ease in this GPS unit ,am able to find Geo-Cashes,daily and now i am hiding my own Geo-caches for other enthusiasts to find.

4 out of 5 stars Overall a good value   April 9, 2008

Other than poorly labeled buttons (embossed black-on-black on the sides of the unit) and a touchy "mouse" on the face of the unit, it does everything you could want. Screen is very readable (from less than 4" out). Super easy to download waypoints for geocaching. Something I'd change if I was in the design dept would be to move the "mouse" (see black dot left of the red 'e') to the right of center as a majority of users will be right-handed and would likely find it easier to use one-handed. Alternately, 'lefties' may well love the feature - so Enjoy! Last word: I would not recommend this unit as a nav system for a driver alone as the screen is too small for that function. Try a Nuvi. They compliment eachother nicely.

4 out of 5 stars works great indoors   April 7, 2008
I just got mine. It got a fix within a few minutes the first time I powered it on at home (indoors) and now gets a fix indoors within a few seconds.
Doesn't have an altimeter or compass but I have those already.
Haven't tried it anywhere else yet.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value   April 5, 2008

Excellent value; I bought it for less than $140 and it's the best GPS I've ever had
The sensibility and acquisition-speed of the GPS are amazing. It has satellite signal even inside the garage! Maybe it's because of the new SIRFstar 3 sensor
It comes with a USB cable that is a lot more practical and fast than the old serial cables. And you can use the same cable to power the GPS too! Just connect it to a USB port of a laptop or better yet buy a 12v to USB car adapter
