Good with Sony, Bad with Pioneer May 23, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've had OPDV971H HD for 2 years in conjunction with Sony Bravia LCD, worked very nicely. Now that I got a better quality Pioneer Plazma it is abvious that the player doesn't produce good picture quality. will be buying something new.
Best player I have ever owned March 27, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This by far is the best DVD player I have ever owned. I love the intelligent up-conversion, its simple look at the fact that I can control just about every facet of the player.
It is amazing they could do all this for so little money. This is one of those devices that if you buy it, you will love it, but you will never be able to get your friends to buy it. Because it does not have the name recognition of many other players, I have noticed friends reluctant to even consider it.
If you are having trouble finding it, call the company direct. Their customer service is excellent.
More than i expected March 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Amazing! This appliance is simply amazing and it's backed by a sound company from which i have received nothing but top notch, lightning-fast customer support from. About 6 months after receiving the player, the remote took a vacation. I emailed the oppo support folks who responded back within a couple hours and posted a walk-through on how to reset the remote and resync it with the player. This worked for a while but when it stopped again, i emailed them once more at which point they asked for my home shipping address. 4 days later i had a new remote in the mail which has worked great ever since. I could only dream of getting this level of support from other companies.
The player itself is wonderful. In a nutshell, it plays -anything- i throw at it. DVDA, SACD, whatever movie files i find on my computer and throw at it... you name it. I even threw a divx file at it on a usb thumb drive and it ate it alive. Played great! The menus are great, the 6 channel direct sound from sacds is just phenomenal. I see allot of folks aren't crazy about the quality of the tray. Well, okay... i admit, you can't stand on it to change a light bulb but it's a cd tray, not a stepladder. I don't see the problem unless you load your dvd's weigh a couple of pounds each.
Bottom line... it's a great player and you can't beat the price for this level of features. The cloth case they send it in is impressive as well. I don't see how anyone can be displeased over this appliance.

"These are the days of miracles and wonder" wrote Paul Simon.
I use the Oppo machine in a system that (apart from the Oppo) would have to be classified as audiophile caliber. The speakers are Martin Logan electrostats. (For normal folks, let's just say they are VERY revealing of detail most speakers muffle. Very critical of anything wrong, therefore.)
The machine it replaced died, and I needed something to feed digital data to my D to A converter. So basically I'm using it as a transport. But the stunning thing is that my system IMPROVED when I put the Oppo in, instead of the transport I'd used for years, which (in its time) was considered state of the art.
It seems like we are offered more and more performance from less and less expensive toys. You'd have had to pay hundreds of dollars more to touch this performance a decade ago: to me the miracle is how much the Oppo achieves at an absurdly inexpensive price.
Someone else said something about it being "cheaply built." OK, but I go by actual performance.
In my system, it's making me toe-tappin' happy.
Great up-scaling DVD player February 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We have a 37" 720p (and 1080i) LCD tv. We bought this upscaling DVD player to ride out the format wars. The picture is incredible. I can definitely tell the difference between a Blue Ray disc and an up-scaled DVD, but honestly, the difference is probably slight for all but the largest screens. Now that it looks like Blue Ray will be the winner, we will keep our eye out for a nice Blue Ray player to complement the Oppo.
