2 out of 5 stars Needs Work   November 12, 2007

I am normally not an ipod basher. I upgraded to this model from my 5G 60gb because I needed more space in my portable music player for all my media. However, the ipod's laggy menus, spinning hard drive that eats up battery juice at a moment's notice, the fact that the cover flow is annoyingly moody all contribute to a not so good device. Also, the sound quality has decreased dramatically. Hopefully a firmware update can help out. Maybe I just need a new sound system in my car.

All my previous ipods have been "get up and go", but this one I constantly have to stop and make sure the hard drive's stopped spinning, the music is definitely off, etc. Annoying for someone like me who is always on the go.

Also disappointed that my car chargers are no longer working on my ipod. I knew Apple stopped 3rd party devices so they could make more money, but this is ridiculous. This combined with the quick eating of the battery due to the spinning hard drive and the classic will not be traveling on any of my road trips.

This ipod might end up going back, but I will continue to give it more chances. We need the newest update to 1.0.3. Hopefully Apple will have learned from their horrendous mistakes.

4 out of 5 stars Really less than 160 GB   November 12, 2007

The sound is better in the previous version and really isn't 160 GB. The truth is that the capacity is around the 140 GB. Wherever, the coverflow characteristic is great. A good quality product.

1 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time   November 10, 2007

There are 2 major shortcomings to the new 160 classic:

1. If you have been using prior video Ipods as sources for video devices (e.g.the My Vu) then it is highly likely the classic won't work. Apple has added an authentication chip that makes the new classic incompatible with most older video devices. You can find documentation of this on the web and if you call Apple support.

2. On the Mac (at least, haven't tried on a PC) if you have a large music collection (presumably why one buys the 160) synching is unreliable and painfully slow, as is attempting to eject the IPod. Itunes often freezes and one needs to do a "force quit" and restart. The firmware updates do NOT fix this problem to date.

I'd suggest searching the Web to confirm these observations, but my view is that this is a crippled IPod (regarding the video) with the overall quality of a beta device. DO NOT buy it if you are trying to get a larger IPod to handle large video or music libraries. Recalling this is basically a tiny hard drive, Apple hasn't gotten the hardware or software right and iced this with crippling the video capabilities of the device without telling anyone before hand.

This is an amazing piece of technology! I cannot imagine life without this and cannot remember what life was like before this! Everyone should own one!

4 out of 5 stars It`s Amazing   November 8, 2007

It's my fifth iPod. The software it's incredible but a little slower. I change in each generation and this one is without a doubt some the best. And the battery it is longer duration than others generation.
