4 out of 5 stars Great Player at a great price. software can be tricky   July 9, 2008
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1MATHO10J2QVC My first video review, just showing the Creative Zen in action a bit.

the video and picture quality is very nice, the sound is also great (if you have good headphones) using the Zen takes a bit of time to get used to but once you do its very easy.

NOTE: Install the Zen software before plugging the Zen to your PC. I did this and have not had any problems with it (Using Windows XP).

4 out of 5 stars Living Zen in an iPod World   July 8, 2008
First, I purchased this "New" from Amazon's warehouse_deals, but the package was clearly opened and the plastic hardcase slashed. The player works fine, but I'll always wonder if future problems were caused by someone else who dipped it in a toilet before sending it to Amazon.

The Zen is a replacement for my 5th and last iPod, all of which died of natural causes. I'm astonished at the functionality, space and design offered for such a low cost. (Why didn't I make the switch sooner?)

I had two very large problems with the Zen that do not tarnish the player itself, but buyers should be aware of before committing to this unit.

There don't seem to be a lot of accessories for the Zen. Sure, you've got your silicone covers and your charger and whatnot, but what about fancy speakers? Creative's own site has more accessories for iPods than they do for their own players. The accessories they do have for their players usually don't translate well between different models, leaving newer Zen users up the creek until new model-specific hardware is released. Universal speakers are available through other sites, but are generally poor quality. For most I/O accessories, you will be limited to whatever uses a headphone jack.

This unit does not come with its own charger, and the battery life is not stellar (the screen stays lit during play), so you will have to purchase this separately or make sure you keep your little guy plugged into your computer when it's not in use.

The Windows support for this (and other devices that don't come with their own proprietary drivers) is really shoddy. A quick jump over to the Creative boards or around on CNET shows users having to install additional Windows software or make manual system configurations to get this new device to show up in Windows Explorer, or even recognized by Zen's own software. I received a dreaded "A service installation section in this INF is invalid" message, which has a myriad of potential fixes, all related to Windows' poor support of media devices. No fault on Creative's part, but still very painful to fix.

For iTunes users, there is software that integrates a Zen (or any other MP3 player), but the software syncs your entire library or one playlist at a time, defeating the purpose of purchasing a small-capacity player. Further, the sync software usually requires more 3rd party software or .NET framework, which is not conducive to running a slim, trim Windows environment.

Creative's own software requires you manually manage your playlists, track by track. I eventually threw up my hands and switched to MediaMonkey, which has native support for the Zen and many other non-iPod (or "niPod") players. It seems to be the standard recommendation for Creative players.

There's nothing wrong with this tiny, rich player, but I wish the rest of the world were ready for it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent player for the price   July 8, 2008
I am an ex-apple head, when I looked around, I found this player which had many good reviews from professional reviewers. After purchase of a Transcend 8gb sdhc card, which the nano does not even have a slot for, the Zen now cost $120 for 12gb of storage. For less than a 4gb nano, I have a 12gb player with a larger screen than the nano, an FM tuner, a built-in microphone, and no need to use iTunes. I have had no wsod issues, and it has only frozen once (because I unhooked it while it was transferring). As for the people who complain about the sd slot not being integrated, there is a simple solution: put your music on the player, and videos on the card!:O Also, the sound quality is excellent, better than ipod in my opinion. The only major bad thing is having to convert mp4s. I give it 4.5 stars, if Amazon would let me.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the price   July 6, 2008
I bought this one last month, i paid around $90. good one for the price. Pricture clarity is excelent and so is the sound ! i have trouble in understanding the playlist, arranging the music albums, yet to get used to may be. Other wise this is a wonderful stuff..

4 out of 5 stars nice device   July 3, 2008

A remarkable device for the price if you are on a budget. The zen is easily recognizable by linux which is very flexible. The os on the device is very simple and accessible no manual needed. The software that is provided helps you to convert your videos so they are compatible with the zen. It even syncs up with Windows media which the zune can not do . Overall it is a good mp3 player.
